The fiddle-leaf fig ficus, or ficus lyrata, is hands down my favorite indoor house plant. These living art sculptures are characterized by large, stiff, and almost leather like dark green leaves radiating off wooden stems. It’s also super hardy – ideal for all of you with black thumbs out there!

Love the fiddle leaf fig tree. I have one at home and I always get compliments on it. It truly is like a sculpture.
They do need a lot of light to survive though or they will start to loose their leaves.

I have one and I have to say it’s pretty high maintenance! Leaves started dropping so we watered it less; then moved it to sun; then to shade; then watered it a bit more….and now it’s an ugly site.
Given how expensive they are — I know feel the pain as there are only 8 leaves (and now calculate that each leaf is worth $50). So sad!

My grandmother has an absolutely massive one in her kitchen since the 80’s. Like this thing is curled under the ceiling its so big.
They are SUPER super trendy. Like the only blog approved house plant, I would say. I have a zizi plant, also super hearty and sculptural, but its not a tree.
I have 2 huge ones in my dining room. I like the fact that they bring in some oxygen as well.
These are my favorite trees as well I absolutely love them I have found these big beauties in Africa and India and have bemoaned not being able to have one outside my house. Never thought of potting one! I am just so please!!

Well these are beautiful… but I promptly googled them to find out if I could possibly not kill this thing, and I found out it was poisonous to cats and dogs! I thought it’d be a good houseplant since my 2 cats *might* not be able to reach the leaves to chew them all off, but I wouldn’t chance it if it’s poisonous. Darn.

Actually, these ARE great for plant killers! I can’t even keep an ivy alive but this ficus grows like mad no matter what I do!Two years ago when I bought it it was about 3 feet tall. I repotted it right away, put it in my south window, water it whenever (I’m awesome at forgetting to water and, when I do remember, over-watering) and now it’s 5′ tall with new shoots out the bottom and several new branches! When we were rebuilding the front wall of our house last summer, it got left outside for a time and got badly sunburned. The worst leaves fell off and the rest have been recovering since. Recently I started watering it with the run-off from my sprouts; since then (app. 2 months), it’s grown 6″ and sprouted even more branches! It must love the extra carbs 🙂

A friend heavily pruned her two inside fiddle leaf ficus trees and gave me the cuttings. They were branches about 3-4 feet in length. I stuck them in two different pots in potting soil. I don’t remember if I used rooting hormone or not, but both of the pots with 3-4 branches all rooted. I’ve since cut them back and re-rooted to other pots. I keep them outside (I live in NE Florida) as my house is too dark. I gave one to my sister and she put it in a room with too little light. She just returned it to me with each and every leaf half green, half black! Now what the heck am I supposed to do to cure THAT? Just wait for it to grow out all over again? It’s going down to 34 tonight and I do NOT feel like getting the hand truck to roll these two into the garage. I think I’m going to take my chances. Cross your fingers! Science project. . .
