I'm not sure I'll ever tire of velvet bows. They're wonderfully luxurious, rich in color and texture, and the perfect touch on any wreath, garland, or tree. I actually keep a stash of velvet ribbons of all widths and hues to wrap gifts year-round. This holiday season, I wanted to play around with volume, doubling up on bows and making them drapey, almost as if they were spilling over the mantle and off the tree. Here is a little trick to tying a perfect double bow!
Start by laying down the thinner ribbon first, face down. Next, lay down the wider ribbon perpendicular to the center of the thinner ribbon, face down. Criss cross the ribbon, leaving 3" or more inches on each side.
Pull both ends of the thinner ribbon up and tie a single knot around the center of the middle of the wider ribbon.
Tie a bow.
I like to use the good-old fashioned bunny ears method.
To get the your single sided ribbon to face out, you'll need to adjust the ribbon. Flip the left tail so the right side of the ribbon is facing out.
Then flip the left loop so the right side of the right tail is facing out.
Pull tightly and you've just made the perfect double bow!! At this point, you can pull the loops out wider to make the bows drape more dramatically. To hang them, use a piece of wire and slide it through the back of the bow knot to twist them onto a garland or wreath.
