Brothers Stas and Vlad Shmelevsky's foray into millinery started with a love affair with a hat. In fact, it was a photograph of a hat and after much time searching, they came up short finding anything similar in their home country of Ukraine. So what is one to do in this situation? Learn to make hats, of course! After a year and a half dedicated to mastering the lost art of custom hat making, and training with European and American milliners, the duo launched their eponymous collection. Inspired by the vivid colors of Anish Kapoor's sculptures and the contours and silhouettes of Richard Serra's work, the Shmelevsky brothers try to employ unconventional shapes without depriving their hats of utilitarianism. I love their use of color and shape - not to mention, the incredibly chic details like geometric gold hat bands and unique shape of each crown.
