Avarcas

The first avarca sandal originated in Menorca, a small island in the Spanish Mediterranean, and were made from recycled tires to keep the feet of farmers and villagers cool.ย Since 1945ย Avarcas Ponsย has specialized in artisan Menorcan sandals for three generations. I bought myself a pair of these years ago when I lived in Spain and I can’t even begin toย explainย how happy I am that they areย available stateside now. Trust me, you will love them!

  5. Lately I’ve seen a bunch of different people wearing these in NYC.
I’m not crazy about how closed up the toes it, but I don’t mind the rest of the sandal.
Love all the colors that they come in.

This trend stateside is kind of hilarious to me. I have nothing against these sandals and I’m sure they’re super comfy, but I think of them as spanish old man slippers and think it’s crazy that they’re popping up in all sorts of super hip and fashionable stores right now. Not complaining, just sort of chuckling.

Hi! I’m from Menorca and I’m so excited to see this here!! I want to answer Shelley’s question; the original and artisan ones are still made out of recycled tires, but there are lots of imitations from low cost stores and some of the newer models with the avarca sole higher that not.
Here there are lots of options but I guess in the USA you just can buy them on this website, i don’t know. Anyway I recomend you guys to buy artisan and recycled ones because they are more ecologic and it’s a strong shoe and I guarantee that you’ll have them for a long long time!!

I visited Menorca few years ago and have good friends living in the island of Menorca and I know for sure that these avarcas from Pons are artisan made. I own a pair of Pons and their quality and craftsmanship is outstanding. These are handcrafted in small workshops by locals from the island. What I like about Pons is that they have the label of authenticity. I’d buy always brands with the label so this way, we avoid the mass production of a sandal that has been handcrafted since a century ago.
