Abacá

The jute fiber of the Abacá, a native plant of the Philippines, is some of the strongest and durable natural fibers, making it the material of choice when it comes to handwoven goods. After recently stumbling across these Abacá handbags, and learning of the tedious process that’s required to weave these bags from their rawest form, I had to purchase the Tiaco circle bag for myself. Plus, a portion of proceeds goes to Right Start Foundation, a non-profit, non-government organization for underprivileged Filipino children. Done and done. Say hello to my summer bag!

I’m loving the backpack! Reminds me of one I bought when I was in Costa Rica that I sadly gave away.

But the backpack in the third photo is not made from abaca. its made from rattan. rattan is said to be fast disappearing in our countryside here in the philippines.
