Gibbs Farm

Gibbs Farm, a large sculpture park in North Auckland, New Zealand, is home to a collection of incredible, large scale artworks by some of the world’s most significant artists. Because most all the works are commissioned, artists are able to cater to the lay of the land. Neil Dawon’s Horizons is probably one of my favorites – not only is it one of the earliest sculptures to be commissioned for the Gibbs Farm, it also sits on one of the highest points of the property. I love the tromp l’oeil effect as what seems like a floating, drawn piece of paper is actually a massive sculpture made of welded steel. This place is definitely going on the bucket list.

Wow, it’s amazing! It looks better from air then from ground. I’m wondering how it could look after about 10 years without people who care about it – what nature would do with it 😉

Was lucky enough to visit the farm last year while doing an art history honours year at the University of Auckland…it was such a special day overloaded with fantastic, breathtaking and sobering art. Each work was so specific to the site, played off it beautifully. The Anish kapoor kept bouncing and stretching like some creature in the wind while we staggered round in the tall grass in gumboots, the Richard Serra was overpowering up close and created pockets of echoes as we walked along. It’s not open to the public but I wish it was! Thank you for the photos 🙂
