DIY Miu Miu Sneakers

Posted by on

Do you remember the last time you Sharpie-d or embellished a pair of sneakers? For us, it had been far too long so when we saw Miu Miu‘s latest glittery sneakers for fall, we were anxious to bling out our own pair using a pair of classic Vans as our canvas. But honestly, what fun is it unless you can DIY a pair too? Leave a comment and we’ll select a reader, at random, to choose their own pair of DIYable Vans. More details after the jump!

You’ll need:

Start by taping the edges of the shoes, covering the rubber soles. Cover both toes with tape as this is where the rhinestones will be glued on later. (Click images to enlarge)

Add one part course glitter to two parts Mod Podge into a small plastic cup or tray.

Stir the mixture thoroughly with a paintbrush. The consistency should be rather thick but not pasty. Apply a layer of the glitter mixture to the shoe. Allow to dry for 10-15 minutes and add a second and third layer until hardly any white space is showing. Use an exacto knife or the edge of your fingernail to scrape off any glitter that might have dried onto the grommets or soles.

Remove the tape. Using adhesive, glue the rhinestones on the toe in any pattern.

Sport your new Miu Miu inspired glittery sneakers with or without laces!

Don’t forget to leave a comment for your chance to DIY your own pair of Canvas Authentic or Slip-On Vans! (Sorry, limited to US & Canada residents only. Winner will be announced and contacted by email on Friday, September 9th. Good luck! xx) **Contest is now closed. Vans was kind enough to giveaway two pairs of Vans, so congrats to Rebekkah & Camille!

I used to work for Vans and we would host DIY parties all the time. This is a great idea for bday parties and i even made DIY shoes for Brides-To-Be for their wedding day… you know how their Brides feet get tired. I would dress them up with pearls and lace for shoe laces :) If anyone does any soon, i’d love to see!

Love all the great Ideas!! You all are living outside the box like I am!!
    Karen

  91. Jen    September 6, 2011

They look great! Would the glue not stick if you painted the toe of the shoes? I think having a flat color besides white under the rhinestones, making them reflect more of a yellow/gold like the rest of the shoe would be even more gorgeous. :)

  92. Baylee    September 6, 2011

wow these are beautiful!!! my feet would be so glam with these bad boys on!

  93. Katrina L    September 6, 2011

These are amazing! perhaps you could spray paint the shoes gold first to get the full effect??

  124. Another Anonymous Designer    September 7, 2011

Hell must have FROZEN OVER because I haven’t owned a pair of sneakers in 15 years! And for some reason, I’m now lusting after sneakers that are a reflection of my personality. All i can think about are ways to take ordinary shoes or sneakers and recreate them in a way that doesn’t deviate from my style. This just added another avalanche to the snowstorm!

  125. Bennett S.    September 7, 2011

    I LOVE THIS IDEA!
I am a guy but I would so rock these shoes, Id do it in black glitter on my white leather chucks but exacto cut zebra print! Cant forget the jewels though!!! love & lipgloss!

  126. Caitlyn    September 7, 2011

I love taking a sharpie to my sneakers after I’ve worn them out. It brings new life to old things and makes the jeans and tshirt look a little more interesting. The glitter is a great idea to make them snazzy! Thanks!

  127. joni    September 7, 2011

i dont think i could do that to my beloved vans, or anyone else’s. but i might get the multi colored sharpies and draw some geometric designs reminiscent of my first pair c.1983

  128. Kristi Kendall    September 7, 2011

These are really cute! I am not usually into glitter but these might be an exception…

  129. Alyssa    September 7, 2011

  153. Shannon    September 8, 2011

I have to say that when I stumbled upon this DIY, I continued reading but wasn’t expecting to be impressed. How WRONG I was! They look AMAZING!!! Much cuter then the Miu Miu pair. I would probably choose more of a bronze or copper glitter and similar color laces, but that’s the beauty of DIY . I’m bookmarking your site and look forward to seeing what you come up with next.

  154. Elin    September 8, 2011

This is honestly such a great idea to make your plain white sneakers sparkle and shine in such a unique way!!! Thanks for the DIY and I can’t wait to try it out!!

  165. LESLEY    September 8, 2011

  166. Maria    September 8, 2011

Whoa. I don’t even like glitter…but these shoes…they’re all sorts of amazing!
I wonder what the outcome would be like if I used blue, green, white, pink&purple glitter to make it look sort of ‘space nebula’ like…

  167. Maria    September 8, 2011

    I should try this out.

  172. Rose    September 12, 2011

Vans and sparkles –> appeals to both my California skate culture and magpie glitter loving tendencies = perfect!

  173. Sarah White Trash    September 18, 2011

Gorgeous, I would definitely need some studs on mine though. Studs and glitter.

  174. Rhiannon    September 19, 2011

So *bleepin* cute!! I like yours a lot better than the Miu Miu sneakers!

  175. Kinsey    September 20, 2011

I tried this, and they look fab! Only thing is, I wore them to school today and I’m pretty sure I left a trail of falling off glitter wherever I went…

  176. Orean C.    September 26, 2011

I just saw you feature this on the Martha Stewart show and I love it, I think this will be a cute and fun project for me and my daughter to try.

  177. Lynn    September 26, 2011

Seen you make these this morning on Martha Stewart. They look so easy I am gonna make this for my niece who loves every thing sparkly!!

  178. Kristal K    September 26, 2011

I love these shoes! Thanks for the tutorial, I’ve been dying to make these for my daughter….and now, maybe a pair for myself!

  179. Carly    September 26, 2011

This honestly inspires me to have a huge craft party with my bridesmaids and make these for my wedding! Gosh, I HATE traditional formal shoes!

  180. mart    September 27, 2011

I love the glitter shoes. I so them done on Martha Stewart. I’m 63 years young and love fun clothes and shoes.

  181. Whitney    September 27, 2011

HONESTLY…WTF!!! These are so damn fabulous, I want to win/make them!!!! IM IN LOVE, dare I say that your are more fabulous than MIU MIU’s version!

  182. Theresa    September 27, 2011

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these. I just saw this on Martha Stewart and decided that I wanted to do this with the grandkids at Thanksgiving to keep them busy (There’s 12, so we need to keep them busy, but just the girls – 7), but I’m kind of a neat freak so I just may make them all myself to give at Christmas. There are so many colors I could do for little girls! Too cute. Lime Green, Purple, Hot Pink, Turquoise, Sage, Dk. Brown the list goes on. But I’m wondering do they have to be done on Van’s or any canvas shoe?

  183. Erica    September 27, 2011

@Theresa, they can be done to ANY canvas shoe (Keds, Converse, etc)!! Good luck – be sure to post pictures to our Facebook page so we can see what you’ve made! xx

  184. Pam    September 30, 2011

Beautiful – saw then on Martha Stewart and brought me to the site! One thought – what about dying the shoelaces with acrylic paint and textile medium in a color similar to the gold?

  185. Jiahwan    October 2, 2011

these diy sneakers are really awesome! love how the glitter looks so much smoother than the ones on the miumiu sneakers. maybe the shoelaces should be a colour similar to the gold base? (:

  186. Hannah    October 3, 2011

Amazing!! Does the glitter fall off? And if, would it help to spray Tham Whitney hairspray? :)

  187. Erin    October 7, 2011

just finished my own pair last week. i love them. some of the glitter falls off, but i like the idea of leaving a trail of gold glitter wherever i go!

  188. Christy    October 7, 2011

Dearest Erica – Please please please can you tell me the sizes of the 4 variety of rhinestones you used? The craft stores where I live do not seem to carry the sew on setting rhinestones so I am going to order some online. I would like to order from the link you gave above when referencing the rhinestones. I would greatly appreciate your help! I am looking to create these for a wedding shoot!!! :)

    LOVE YOU GALS!!

  189. Sassy    October 12, 2011

Absolutely out of this world…………………………. these are the best looking sneakers ever. Would love to be able to do a pair of my own, disabled and can’t buy a lot of craft items now, husband hasn’t worked in quite awhile due to job going to Mexico. Keeping fingers crossed though, you never know, this might be my time to win. Keep up the great work, I am lovin these shoes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  190. Pam    October 13, 2011

These are so great! I am making a pair tomorrow. My question is can I use a black pair of Van’s? Wouldn’t the Mod Podge and glitter cover that as it would white? If not I will get a white pair tommorow. You were very professional on Martha’s show by the way!

  191. Ashlee    October 15, 2011

OK So I had an old pair of white canvas wedge sandals that weren’t so white anymore and OMG, Its amazing what some black glitter and glue can do!!!

  192. Rachel    October 17, 2011

Love them. I think they are even nicer than the “real” ones! :)

  193. Katrina    November 7, 2011

How do they do in the rain? Does the glitter rub off easily? Is there another type of adhesive I could use to coat the glitter and rhinestones all together to make them bind a little better?

  194. Siobhan    November 9, 2011

Oh my gosh those are SO pretty. I must make some… Any suggestions on alternate shoes to use as a base?

  195. Caroline    November 14, 2011

No offense to Vans but I found the same style white sneakers on the payless website for fifteen bucks.

  196. Carmen    November 15, 2011

These turned out great. I made a gold and red pair for myself and a turquoise pair for my 10 year old niece (i let her pic out her own glitter color). The only thing we did different is buy the white canvas shoes from Payless shoes for 14.99 they were much cheaper then the $30 vans.

  197. Nicole    November 16, 2011

this is absolutely an awesome idea…. I have been looking for a way to spice up some plain white sneakers i got from Target that look just like the Vans used in this DIY project….SO EXCITED and cannot wait to try this myself.

  198. Julia    November 30, 2011

OOOOH. I’ve been wanting the Miu Miu sneekers but could never afford them…I never thought of doing this, let alone how to do this!
    THANKYOU!

  199. Kooki    December 9, 2011

OMG it’s just soooooooo cool , I’m so goin to make a project on that !!!!!

  200. SheRocS    December 9, 2011

Um these are F’ING BOMB girl, uh WAY BETTER than the Miu Miu’s if you ask me (sorry MIu Miu). Keep it up, because I’m totally having a party just to make these with my girls.

    YOU ROCK!

  201. Bonnie    January 18, 2012

I’m SO going to do something like this! Rhinestones really aren’t my thing though, so I might switch that up a bit. :)

  202. jerina    January 26, 2012

Does the glitter flake off after walking or it is really stuck onto the shoe?
Bc I just bought a pair of super super cheap canvas shoes from payless and I simply cannot wait to recreate this!!!

  203. Henriette    February 1, 2012

So cool shoes, but my glitter flakes off when useing them :(

  204. Ellen M    February 16, 2012

We don’t have Mod Podge in Sweden so do you know which kind of glue I should use? Or can I use “normal” glue from a hobby story? Pls, anser me on my e-mail or URL. So cool shoes!

  205. meghan    February 27, 2012

I made them this weekend, and they are awesome! Except, I notice that when I’m walking the glitter has cracked horizontally across the front… any thoughts on how to fix?

  206. Cassidy Bright    March 3, 2012

These are adorable!! I am going to make some with black and silver glitter and wear them to Prom, they’ll match my dress perfectly! Thank you for the idea. You could be the next Martha Stewart.(:

I found this website yesterday, and actually fell in love with it! Loving these sneakers! They truly look amazing, and so chic, yet casual at the same time! I actually think that you guys are so awesome for all these DIY’s, because they actually look so similar that I would have though VANS made the glitter sneakers. Love it!

  219. Letisse    June 4, 2012

I saw these at the airport yesterday and instantly feel in love. I google searched it’s home and come to find out I can not afford the originals. I was pretty bummed! Now, with this idea I will give it a try to make my own pair! Thanks!!!!!

Where did you buy your rhinestones? Did you go to a crafting store or did you get them from that link?

  224. Ann Geyer    August 24, 2012

My twin girls and I are making these for the start of school — doing it themselves, one can have pink and one can have purple, and Mom can have pink too! Thanks for the super easy directions.

  225. Jessica Turner    September 12, 2012

I didn’t even realize I needed these until I saw you make them with Martha the other day! Thank goodness I was home from work with an ear infection!

  226. Arummmanis    September 27, 2012

Hey…got a question for you. Which method is better? Glitter glue paste or you put glue on the canvas first then you sprinkle glitter on top? Also, does the method affect the how the glitter stick to the canvas?

    Arum

  227. Hazel Phalen    September 29, 2012

i thought this looked like a super cute diy but when i tried it it turned out pretty bad…. when i wore them the creases from were your foot bends made an imprint in the glitter so now theres a line were theres no glitter

  228. leximaa    January 30, 2013

Those are GORGEOUS! I might just make those myself if i dont win… I hope i do tho cuz they sexxy!
