DIY Lace Layering Skirt

The moment I tried on this DKNY lace slip dress, I instantly fell in love and knew it would quickly become a wardrobe staple. I was mostly smitten with the extra wide lace trim that provided the perfect amount of transparency – so much so that I wanted one in white and ivory, in addition to the black. Surely there should be an easy way to recreate it with a simple slip and couple of yards of delightful lace trim. It turns out, even with my amateur sewing skills, it was 100% doable and I now can’t get enough of my new favorite layering piece.

You’ll need:

When picking a slip, make sure that the fabric isn’t too stretchy and that there aren’t any slits along the sides. Start by opening up one side of the slip using the seam ripper. You should end up with one large rectangular piece of fabric. Measure the bottom or the longest side.

diylaceskirt3

Take that measurement and cut that amount out of the Chantilly lace wider. If you search for “lace widers” online, you should find lace trims measuring about 14-16 inches in width. I love Chantilly lace because the pattern is so gorgeous and at least edge is beautifully scalloped or detailed. Pin the lace trim over the edge of the bottom of the skirt – with at least an inch overlap. It’s okay if this edge of the lace isn’t straight. Sew together using a fine machine needle and a zig zag stitch.

diylaceskirt4

Now that the lace is attached, line the vertical edges together – with the outside sides facing each other. Pin the edges together and sew with a straight seam.

diylaceskirt5

Trim away any loose threads and you’re done! Layer under an oversized sweater . . .

And we dare you not to make another!

I love this! I recently bought a few yards of fabric just because it was cute and on sale, but I realized that I really wanted to make a maxi out of it and I didn’t have enough. This has given me new inspiration for my dress. It will end up being a short summer dress, but I can lengthen it with a lace curtain that I picked up at a thrift store. It will add the length I want without having to track down more of that clearance fabric! Perfect idea! Thanks!
