DIY Découpage Floral Bag

Posted by on

When H&M asked us to DIY a boho-inspired item for their summer issue, découpage was the first thing that came to mind. Honestly, does it get any better than customizing a simple handbag with a brilliant floral print? However you create it, it’ll be satisfying to know that you’ve designed yourself a one of a kind bag!

You’ll need:

Start by taping off the edges and hardware of the handbag.

Squeeze a dollop of colored craft paint into a small disposable container. Apply a layer of paint to the desired section.

Allow the first layer to dry completely. Apply another coat or two.

While the paint dries, carefully cut out a handful of flowers from the fabric.

Arrange them onto the painted section of the bag. Glue the flowers on with Mod Podge and seal them by applying another layer on top.

Remove the painter’s tape when the Mod Podge has dried clear and your floral handbag is complete!

Love this sooo much!!! Have to try it! But I can’t seem to find the bag in h&m :(

  4. Aves Gry    June 12, 2012

I had a feeling Mod Podge was used in the making but I never would have guessed you used paint on it as well. Did the paint started chipping and cracking?

  5. Erica    June 12, 2012

@AvesGry, I used Martha Stewart craft paint, which DOES NOT crack or chip. I would definitely recommend it. Hope that helps! xx

Really great way to jazz up a bag. Where did you get the gorgeous fabric?

  10. AMARillo NEON    June 12, 2012

Now I understand it, when I saw this bag I didn’t surely know how you had made it., I thought you had simply glued the cloth, and it had resulted perfectly. But it was much simpler. It’s a great idea.

    Kisses.

So much easier than I thought it would be. Love that it makes it one of kind!

  12. Monica    June 12, 2012

This doesn’t even look like a DIY project, it looks like a bag right off a high end fashion designers collection, or a bag sold at H&M itself! Great job! I’ve seen brown satchels everywhere, but making it your own is a good thing to do, and I definitely want to try this out! All I need is some pretty fabric!

This is really pretty but couldn’t you just mod podge the fabric onto the bag and save yourself from cutting out all of the flowers?

  21. Ariane    June 15, 2012

    Just love this!

Any tips on how to DIY a pair of Cole Haan inspired Alisa brogues??

  22. Michelle    June 15, 2012

Why would anyone want to do that to a perfectly fine purse?

  23. FiFi    June 15, 2012

Where did you get the bag to begin with i have been dying to find a brown leather messenger bag for years and i would love to buy one similar to yours…thank you!

We made bags like this over the weekend! It was awesome and they turned out great. I did my own twist on the project and made everything from recycled materials. I got a bag in good shape from Goodwill, and bought a secondhand shirt to use for the fabric. Awesome bag for ~$15 in materials! Love it!

  25. Frankie    June 20, 2012

This is such a cool idea, and will be put on my ‘to make’ list immediately. Thanks so much!

  26. Ana Zilio    June 22, 2012

This handbag is amazing, with and without your DIY! Wish had some H&M store here in Brazil. :(

  27. Heather    June 22, 2012

This is so wonderfully cute and creative! Like Mimi, I am also wondering how this would work on a canvas bag. I think it would be really cute on a tote. Would fabric paint be better to use on canvas? And I don’t work with mod podge much, does it do well on fabric?

    Thanks so much!

  28. Jessica    June 22, 2012

Hi. I absolutely love that fabric. Can you tell me where you found it or what the name of the fabric is called? Thanks!

  29. Grace    June 27, 2012

But this bag wouldn’t be okay with rain because of the modge podge being water soluble, right? It would start getting goopy…

  38. amber    August 18, 2012

Did anyone find a bag like this one? I’ve been trawling through the internet in search of a bag as nice as this one but have had no success yet :( Have come close, but this one is the perfect size, a great colour and looks nice plain too.

  39. Varonica N.    September 12, 2012

is it okay if i didn’t put modpodge on the paint layer before i put the floral design on?
I simply placed the design on the painted bag & modpodged on top of everything.
