Kantha

I’m sure you’re familiar with Kantha quilts, made popular by Anthropologie and Jeanette Farrier.  And if you’re not, Kantha is an embroidery technique used by women in Bangladesh and in West Bengal, India.  Typically recycled cotton and silk saris are used and then layered with a simple running stitch.  These large shawls from Vajra are soft, luxurious, colorful and on sale!

(Silk Shawls by Vajra $100 each)

jeanette farrier”s are made of 100% cotton and not silk. They are also personally matched by jeanette farrier herself.

‘personally matched’ Jeanette Farriers quilts maybe, but the WHOLE POINT of kanthas (IMHO anyway) is the unexpectedness of them, the little patch here or random swatch of fabric there, bit of swirly embroidery or pretty brocade in an unlikely place..all that good stuff which makes a ‘real’ kantha a thing of magick.

And Farriers quilts cost..wait for it..580 bucks EACH!!!!! Patently, they are for those with more money than moxie, esp when you can get stunning authentic, 100% cotton kanthas on ebay or etsy for $50-100 these days. If you go to India of course, they are around $10!!

Wow, it is really cool design. Thanks for sharing this with us. I will surely get them for my friend who shared casino movie facts with me last week because I was searching for them. I want to gift him something but can’t find a good gift until I saw your post.
