Leviathan

Each year the French Ministry of Culture and Communication invites a leading artist to create a work that responds to the exceptional architectural space of the Grand Palais in Paris. For Monumenta 2011 Indian-born artist Anish Kapoor has created Leviathan, a 75,000 cubic-meter balloon made of PVC vinyl. While the exterior may appear to be opaque and aubergine in color, the inside, which visitors are welcome to enter, is a translucent cherry red. If you know me well, you’ll know that I have an unexplainable fear of balloons. But if I were in Paris, this would just be too damn good to pass up experiencing in person. Honestly, incroyable!

I just saw this a couple weeks ago in Paris! Truly incredible. It changes depending on the time of day — We went around 11 at night right before it was closing and instead of being totally red inside it was this eery maroon color with certain bright red spots. Stunning!
