This week we’re turning to our friend and beauty expert Sarah Howard, of Beauty Banter, who is indulging us with her delectable brown sugar lip scrub tutorial. Inspired by one of her favorite lip polishes, Sarah recently discovered how simple it was to make her own organic version at home. The timing couldn’t be more ideal as winter’s typically unforgiving weather has us yearning for soft and smooth lips!Β (PS Be sure to head over toΒ Beauty BanterΒ for our favorite beauty products & tips!)
You’ll need:
- pure coconut oil
- honey
- brown sugar
- a teaspoon
- a tablespoon
- a mixing bowl
- an empty jar or 2.5 oz baby food jar
- labels (optional)
Make sure that the coconut oil is solid enough to scoop up but soft enough for a spoon to dig in. If the coconut oil is too oily, stick it in the fridge for 10-20 minutes. If the coconut oil is too hard, place it into a sink ο¬lled with hot water for 5-10 minutes or until soft. Combine one well-rounded tablespoon of coconut oil with one tablespoon of honey into the bowl.Β Besides smelling and tasting incredible, coconut oil is actually an amazing natural ingredient for skin and body products. The oil contains fatty acids and antioxidants that moisturize and nourish the skin while honey contains cleansing and healing properties and is a natural binder.
Mix the coconut oil and honey until they bind together. The consistency should look like thick honey-comb honey. Make sure to mash up all of the coconut lumps so that the mixture is clump-free. This will serve as the base of the scrub.
Add two hand packed teaspoons of brown sugar and fold it into the base. Brown sugar not only tastes fantastic, it is also a great natural exfoliant because itβs not too harsh and leaves skin soft to the touch. All of the brown sugar should be coated in the coconut oil and honey base.
Add one teaspoon of just the oil from coconut oil jar into the bowl. This will help smooth out the mixture and make the scrub extra moisturizing. Transfer the scrub from the bowl into a small jar or container.
The edible scrub will last up to 2 weeks if refrigerated. Before using, allow the scrub to stand at room temperature for a good 10 minutes so that the formula softens a bit. Apply scrub to lips in small, circular motions for 1-2 minutes and rinse off with a warm washcloth. Congratulations – you are now armed with a soft, moisturized, and plump pout. Pucker up! xx, Sarah.

I think this would be great as a body exfoliator as well, not just for the lips…
Great idea! Would using jojoba oil instead of the coconut make this last longer than two weeks?
Hi. Can I use cooking coconut oil (paste not liquid) in this scrub?
Great idea! I have a very similar recepie pour a body scrub. The cold has made my lips sort of chappy and unattractive.
Ooh, I have all these things and I can make this tonight! Even with my humidifier, my room gets so dry at night and I wake up with very chapped lips. Not a great look.
east coast winters are THE WORST and i have chapped lips from october to march. i’ve tried EVERYTHING from carmex to blistex to neosporin overnight treatments, keil’s, burt’s bees, vaseline… EVERYTHING and none of them have helped…. will def try this one out. thanks!

You know, I was just wondering about this the other day when a tried a friend’s lip scrub – I felt like I was eating sand (I couldn’t help getting some in my mouth!). At least this should taste yummy- but I might be sticking to the old fashioned old toothbrush trick.

ou can even use essential oil (not for pregnant woman) + Vit. E π But don’t eat it π
Scrub gently and leave it to moisturize.
Ohh! I can’t wait to try this. I love all natural products.
Just curious… what happens after two weeks? I mean, none of those ingredients would “go bad” after two weeks. Does the scrub start to separate? And if so, couldn’t you just stir it together again?
Sounds awesome. I think I might make some as gifts for friends next xmas! π
Great post! I love natural things!
ughhhhh I want to try this so bad! I just don’t have any coconut oil…. yet.
In the Light of Style
thank you.I am going to try this ASAP
I don’t have the coconut oil!
But i have a question for you.
It’s about the page thing on blogspot.
How can you do more pages under one page.
Example: you have the page: more categories
under that you have beauty etc.
how do you do that?
thanks a lot!

Can I use normal white sugar instead of brown?
i use this as a full body scrub in the shower
This is awesome. Question: Why do you have to refrigerate it? All the ingredients can stand by themselves. Just wondering.
Thanks
sounds delis!! great diy!! thanks for sharing

can this be used as a regular facial scrub or would it be to rough for the skin??
How you make the label? Its cute.
Wow deff gonna try this! I <3 sugar scrubs— just posted a recipe on my blog!
since none of the ingredients were refrigerated in the first place, does the mixture have to be refrigerated?
Amazing! This is a really awesome mixture. We love DIYs on Taaz if you want to share w/ us. π (www.taaz.com)
This looks great, but I’m wondering why it only has a shelf life of 2 weeks. Honey has no expiration date (the real pure stuff) and coconut oil and brown sugar will last for quite some time in an air-tight container. Why the short shelf life?
I love natural kitchen recipes! i found more that you would like here:

I’m allergic to coconut, is the coconut oil 100% necessary?
Brilliant idea! Shall be trying as soon as!
Good homemade lipcare product. Put it in more decorative packaging, would look great on a dresser, or could even be sold from a home business.
try to add a beeswax.it will keep more without refrigerating.
OMG I love this! I cant wait to get it home and try it out. I agree with Li ChunBo, with some great packaging it could be the perfect present for all of your friends! Good luck and keep blogging. Take a peek at my place, http://www.borntobeblonde.com
will surely try this!:)
Just curious, but why does it need to be refrigerated? Honey, brown sugar, and coconut oil don’t need to be refrigerated.
I have to tell you that I pinned this about a month ago, made some immediately, and loved it. In fact, I decided to try it on my face as well, because the honey is a natural antibacterial and the sugar is a safe facial scrubber. I love it so much. Thank you!
Can’t seem to find any containers or jars as that. Anyone have a suggestion of where I should look?
@Isabella, they are baby food jars. You can also use mini jam jars. Good luck!
does the sugar have to be granulated, or can it be fine?
I tried a different DIY lip scrub yesterday – that did nothing! I am excited to try this one, looks much more promising!! π
Sugar lip scrub at sephora: $22
Sugar lip scrub homemade: Free! Because I have all this fuckin crap in my kitchen! π Thank You this is awesome!
Just made one! Still waiting for 10 minutes…I can’t wait to use it!
I’ve left my scrub out for a week and a half, and it hasn’t separated! so I think you can leave it all out π great lip scrub! <3
LOL @ Jackie *Its just the way you put it* That sounded about like me.
I tried it and loved it!! thanks:)
SO GOOD ,LIKE IT
tnx 4 sharin!
This looks great! What do you think the shelf life is on this? Thank you!
Thanks for sharing going to try it on my page π
http://theworkette.blogspot.com/
I was just wondering if you need to put the scrub in the fridge (honey says to refridgerate after opening)
thanks
Hm, you’re supposed to use all that in two weeks??
Since there has been no response to the multiple comments asking why Sarah insists this scrub be refrigerated I will say, within my personal-professional experience as an organic beauty product creator/seller, I have never had this product go rancid without refrigeration. As well, not one of my clients has complained about its shelf life; it has lasted much longer than 2 weeks within its air tight container. So long as you do not allow moisture inside your container and you keep the lid tight, it will last for a while.
Why must it be refrigerated?
Is there any substitution that could be made for the coconut oil? I’m afraid I’m allergic and it would just make my skin come right off altogether! haha. Thanks!
I’ve tried this scrub recipe just now – it works really well and the lips feel so soft! The sugar is surprisingly effective, just make sure not to stir it too much. I sincerely doubt this needs to be refrigerated – anyway, will see how long it lasts! thank you for this post
@Molly, you can always use Vaseline or a petroleum based jelly (of which there are plenty out there available) as a substitution
i can’t wait to try this! xx
thegirlbehindthebow.blogspot.com
Tried this recipe earlier today with my roommates, and we loved it! It’s effective, and way cheaper (and healthier!) than scrubs offered by cosmetics lines.
This sounds amazing! I was just wondering what happens after 2 weeks? will it go bad? Can i still use the same mixure (whats left in the jar) after 2 weeks?
It’s really good for Autumn:)

This works so well! I’m sick and my lips are so chapped right now.
I think the point of putting it in the fridge is to keep the ingredients, especially the coconut oil, pretty solid. As it says in the description, you should let it sit out for about 10 minutes before using so it softens. Sometimes coconut oil turns completely liquid and that makes it really hard to use as a scrub. I’m sitting here with a bit of it and the oil has melted and is already dissolving the sugar a bit and doesn’t work as well. Hence, the need for refrigeration!
just made it, so bomb. mine was a little runny and i didn’t use the extra scoop of just oil. we’ll see how it looks after being refrigerated… i used little jars i bought at michael’s in the paint section. they are tiny, and so cute, i love them. THANKS!
I’ve been obsessed with coconut oil and have been trying out different things I can use it for and this scrub is literally AMAZING. Thank you so much for this!!
xo / R
That is awesome thank you
I made 200 of them for family
hey can we use cooking oil? just in case !! Anyway i like it, but what about B’s and ants at night… he he ;D
Is it ok to use only honey and sugar ???!!!
I’ve made some really good brown sugar scrubs before using OLIVE OIL instead of coconut oil, although I use a tiny bit of the olive oil and more honey because olive oil and honey don’t mix very well.
thankyou π
Wow just tried this out because my lips were dry and icky and it works so well! I noticed a difference! Thank you π
Love this idea and the packaging, and like the comment about using it on hands, too. The labels make it so giftable, will definitely try a little Martha Stewart-ing at home. π http://www.bankstreetbeauty.tumblr.com
I’m am so going to try this out! My lips are so rough!
Yes!! You can definitely kick your lips with this on. It IS edible and completely safe to ingest. Everything used to make this (as long as its food grade) is safe to eat! It taste and smells delicious!
Lick that is. Lol. Not kick. Haha!
This looks truly gorgeous! Can’t wait to mix this up and dry it! It includes Coconut Oil which I already know is a fantastic hydrant and moisturiser! Cheers.
Hey really awesome home remedies for making cute face…….
I love this but why refrigerate it?
Nice idea
Perfect!!! I just made this and used it – I’m instantly hooked! My lips are smoooooth! I wish I took a before picture – there were some chapped parts on my lips and this gently exfoliated them to perfection! Not gonna lie, I licked the scrub on my lips once before removing with a warm wash cloth. Tasty! LoL
nice tips thanks for sharing…. Health and Beauty Community
I am not a DIY person but I had severely dry lips and all the ingredients so I took a chance. I am absolutely thrilled at the result. It was easy to make and better than store bought. I think I may have to do more of these projects! Thank you so much for the instructions!!!
I can’t wait to try this!
It’s actually a nice and helpful piece of information. I’m satisfied that you shared this helpful info with us. Please stay us up to date like this. Thanks for sharing.
I used to just make something similar with coconut oil and raw sugar crystals, it helped to exfoliate it because of the texture but I’m curious to try this version with the honey and see how it works, thanks for the beautiful post! =]
http://www.mingleandmansome.com
Can vanilla extract and peppermint oil be added to this? Is there anyway to add more ingredients or preservatives so this will not need to be refridgerated and last longer?
I just made this but added Demerara sugar as well as brown sugar for more texture and omitted the extra teaspoon of coconut oil and added a little vanilla. Smells and tastes lovely and has definitely left my lips smooth. Thanks for this!
i will made this for sure!

Its a good idea and looks very simple too but do we have a chance of using it with castor oil or any other vegetable oil?
Loved this as soon as I read it. It took me 5minutes to actually make. I had some very small old honey jars (28g) the small ones you get out the supermarket and I had enough mixture to fill two of these jars. One for me, one for my sister. I couldn’t wait long enough to let it set and used it straight away and it still left my lips feeling so smooth and silky after the first try. After I wiped it off with a hot cloth, I slathered my lips with Bepanthem (yes, nappy rash cream) also used by Margot Robbie and it really does make your lips even more supple. Good enough for a baby’s bottomgood enough for my lips as I don’t use any other lip cream or balm apart from this now, oh and my new lip scrub that tastes divine.
you are soooo right i really need to make it and the best part is you can find all of this stuff in your kitchen at home.
