I absolutely love the richness and tradition behind embroidered Suzani textiles. The colorful, needlepointed fabric dates as far back as the late 18th century and was often exchanged like currency or used as dowry payments in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries. We also love suzani. In fact the origins of suzani are much older, coming from the Sogdian era of the 7th and 8th century. These days, some of the skills have been lost, but we (the National Association of Business Women of Tajikistan) are reviving the skills and making high quality new works under our SOHSA initiative.
Suzanis from Tajikisan have very distinctive features and have very high quality embroidery work. Plus through our initiative we are providing a sustainable income for women living in poverty.

How evolved of the Uzbeks to use beautiful garments as tender. What a wonderful futuristic Old World concept. I’ve often wondered how different the whole game would be if intellect could be used as legal tender. Imagine having to pay for groceries by composing a sonnet or solving an algebra equation. I’ll definitely check ebay for some authentic suzani. Thx 4 the heads up.
