Brrrrrr, it’s chilly outside. It’s time to sort through your collection of winter hats, ear muffs, and knit headbands for some necessary protection for that noggin! But before you toss out your favorite slouchy beanie from seasons past, why not revamp it by stitching on a large, furry* pom pom?
* I appreciate the very valid concern about animal cruelty and I hope we all share the same compassion for animals. I would never knowingly point readers to fur that was produced under the conditions mentioned by a couple of commenters. I have changed the link so that it points to faux fur in the hopes that anybody who decides to do this DIY chooses that alternative.
You’ll need:
- a beanie
- a faux fur or handmade yarn pom pom
- embroidery thread
- embroidery needle
- scissors
Thread the needle with about 25 inches of embroidery thread. Double knot the end of the thread.
Find the center of the pom pom and pierce the needle through it. Push the needle through the top of the beanie and pull the thread tight.
Pull the needle back through the top of the beanie and thread the needle through the pom pom in the same spot.
Push the needle back through the beanie. Stitch through the beanie in the inside, going back and forth a few times.
Tie a double or triple knot to secure the thread.
And voila! Your pom pom is attached!
Honestly, who doesn’t love a pom pom?!

I hate to see real fur. It’s a disgusting trade and whenever I see people wearing part of an animal that was tortured and killed just for it’s fur I think significantly less of them. Not sure I will keep following this blog.
I’m with Andie. There’s just no reason for real fur ever, and fake fur would have suited your purposes just fine in this DIY. It somehow seems even more gratuitous when the fur isn’t even being used for warmth.
I think beanies are cuter with a pom pom. Love this DIY!

I think people need to get over the whole fur thing though. If you are against wearing fur then don’t wear any, but if other people want to wear fur, it’s their decision and let them be.
Love this idea, but clicked on the “fur” link and it was to real fox fur (and they can’t be sheared like sheep) and that me incredibly sad. There is no reason for real fur when fake fur is so amazing these days. I agree that people should be able to wear fur if they want to, but they should be educated about what they are wearing. Again, love the idea and will continue to follow your blog.

Really upsetting to see real fur being used here.. The fur industry is so cruel, animals are either trapped in the wild or raised in cages and sometimes skinned alive. Lets stick to the faux stuff, please. Besides the fur this is a cute DIY but u might be losing a follower here..

I genuinely can’t believe you linked your many viewers to real fox fur in order to glam up tired beanies. Approximately 30 million animals are raised in cages and killed worldwide for fur every year. Animals raised on fur farms live in intense confinement, and suffer psychologically. Neurotic behaviors include pacing, circling, self-mutilation, and throwing themselves against the sides of their wire cages. Caged foxes will resort to cannibalism. Although some animals die from disease, stress, cannibalism and self-mutilation, enough survive to make the endeavor profitable.
While you clap yourself on the back due to the popularity of your blog, I hope you’re aware that you’ve spurned a little more evil and cruelty in the world now that you’ve encouraged your readers to purchase real fur; and therefore, kill helpless animals for an ugly token hat they’ll wear a few times and eventually toss out with last season’s knock offs. Congratulations.

yes perhaps real fur is not the most cruelty free of all fashion pleasures in the world but before you attack poor Erica and Lauren who post for their followers DAILY take a second to think about why you visit this blog everyday. One because its awesome and so genuine and i actually feel like I learn something and find something inspiring to do or look at everyday. I am sure that the intention was not to stir up contraversy or in anyway promote animal cruelty.
If anyone wants to begin to speak about animal cruelty first take a look inside your fridge and unless you a serious vegan animal lover you will find some product made from a poor little animal that was also tortured and fed all sorts of crap just so you could eat a burger. What about your leather and your leather boots? take a second to remove yourself from your high horse about animal cruelty and critisize and ART PROJECT of freedom of expression and realize how high the chances are that you are being hypocritical.
@Andi, @Heather, @Jillian, we are lucky enough to live in a free country where we can freely express ourselves on sites like this, if you do not agree with something, do not read it. There is no reason to bring all this negativity to a site as great as this one. Egypt is protesting for their FREEDOM while they get abused and hurt in the streets of their own country, and you are complaining about fur? Priorities. Its a choice. if there was no demand there would be supply.
I agree with @Liv above, I have watched cooking shows etc. that shows animals being killed in the factory and it is not humane in any way shape or form or how about jamie oliver killing a chicken live in his cooking show?? In my opinion, nothing which involves killing can be humane so please stop attacking erica and lauren, it is your choice if you want to wear fur or not.
Totally agree with Liv above, this is such a great and inspirational site, for people to post such brutally hurtful comments against two girls who do care about us readers, and try their hardest to put something good up for us to enjoy and share; its obvious erica didn’t want to encourage the use of fur. It’s fine to express differences of opinion, and I recognize not everyone on here will agree with my point of view, but I think it’s also fine to try to raise awareness. I actually care passionately about human rights, and as a social worker my life has been dedicated to it. Also showing concern that animals are not needlessly tortured does not make me an animal rights nut, nor does it mean that I am spending the majority of my energy on issues of lesser importance– I’ve got space for a lot of causes in my life. I try to live my life by my values in all areas, which means trying to do the least harm possible to humans and animals, while yes, still enjoying myself, which includes liking design and fashion too. I also do my best to avoid brands that have been found to use sweatshop labor and child labor, issues that do seem to get less attention than animal rights for some reason. I recognize that all of us, myself included, will fall down in different areas, whether it’s through the brands we buy, the foods we eat, the causes we support or the politicians we vote for, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try, and it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t give others the opportunity to make informed choices too. I don’t see why fashion blogs can’t also be forums for helping us to be more informed consumers.

There are so many hypocrits out there! So many people just eat meat, wear leather and are saying that wearing fur is cruel?! It’s exactly the same thing! You need to kill an animal if you want the fur but you kill it too if you want to eat it!
People have always worn fur, are wearing fur and will continue to do that! The same as with eating meat, you can’t force someone to become a vegetarian.

yes, honestly wtf is an inspirational blog and has an awesome diy section, but expressing one’s concerns about animal cruelty does not equal being a hypocrite, or being mean or disrespectful to the authors, but maybe everyone could’ve been a bit nicer, there is a difference between “maybe you could link to faux-fur” and “i can’t believe you would ever link to real fur!”
yes, there are people suffering in the world, that doesn’t mean you should block out all other concerns, do you dedicate your whole life to one thing? (do you even dedicate your life to the eradication of human suffering?)
yes, america is a free country where you can choose the way you live, but that doesn’t mean their isn’t a better choice. i don’t believe in black and white, but i do believe in scales of grey. like a fellow reader mentioned, there’s always recycled fur, if it’s that’s so important to you.

Ohmygosh guys. Don’t torture the girls over posting a link to real fur. *NEWSFLASH: People wear real fur. Get over it. If you don’t want to support the fur trade, then don’t wear real fur. It’s fine to express your opinion on the subject, but don’t bring other people down by doing it. I do agree that there are people that would be more benefitted by being protected with the fervor that several of you have protected animals. I myself would prefer to use faux fur as well, simply because I do like animals and dislike the idea of wearing a dead one. That, however, does not mean that I am going to bash people for wearing animal fur, it’s their decision.

I just wanted to say that bunny fur has (generaly) nothing to do with killing an animal for its skin !!
Bunny fur usualy comes from the bunnies that are killed for the food industry, and the fur is used as well , not to waste anything.
I’m fond of animals and I HATE when people consider animals like objects, and not like living beings that have the same right of decency than humans. So wearing fur of an animal that have been killed just for it disgusts me, but again, bunny fur is like leather, it’s used because it was going to be thrown away.
