Were you blown away by Proenza Schouler‘s entire Fall 2011 Collection as much as we were? The juxtaposition of digitalized and geometric Native American inspired prints with decorative, Victorian-like statement necklaces was all kinds of genius. And of course, the jewelry had the wheels in our DIY minds spinning ever since. Erica of PS I Made This recently made a beautiful version of Proenza Schouler’s scroll necklace in white and today, we’re tackling a version in black . . . it’s all about the yin and the yang, right?
You’ll need:
- 4 wooden decorative mouldings (which can also be found at Lowe’s)
- 3 chandelier ornaments or charms
- 9 11mm jump rings
- 1 can of flat black spray paint
- a drill & 3/32″ split point drill bit
- 2 pairs of pliers
- 8 inches of chain & a clasp (or ribbon)
- sandpaper or an emory board
The hardest part of this project is finding decorative mouldings that are small enough to use. A solution is to buy a large moulding and use an x-acto knife to carve out small parts. Usually, the wood used to make decorative mouldings is super light so it can be easily broken away after carving a few lines. Use sandpaper or an emory board to file the edges smooth. Lay all the pieces out on a table for placement. Mark each connecting area with a pen, making sure the markings are symmetrical.
Lay the mouldings on a wooden block and carefully drill holes through each marking. File away any rough edges and brush away any leftover dust.
In a well ventilated area, spray an even coat of flat black paint over the mouldings and charms. Apply a second and third coat if necessary. Let them dry completely.
Connect each piece with a jump ring using the pliers. Finish off the necklace with either 2 pieces of chain and a clasp or some ribbon.
Your Proenza Schouler inspired necklace is finished!

I noticed the wooden pieces are different colors. I was able to find/purchase one of the larger pieces that matched what you had (the lighter wooden pieces there), but couldn’t find anything similar to match the darker wooden pieces. Can you perhaps direct me to a link as to which large ornamental moulding you used?? Thank you so much.
Also, how did you figure out how big to make the necklace?? Meaning, how did anyone figure out how big the original was??
@Denise, I went to my local Lowe’s and Home Depot to find both types of mouldings. You can probably find them in most hardware stores, if not online. Here is a link to the original necklace – pretty close in scale to the one I made.
