The moment we saw designer Nicole Akong‘s dramatically colorful jewelry collection, Conquistadora, we were smitten. Honestly, what’s not to love about these ethnic and tribal inspired pom pom necklaces? And how can we resist figuring out how these beauties were made? With just a few feet of cording, trimming, and chain, we’ll show how you can DIY your own Akong-inspired necklace!
You’ll need:
- 2 feet of pom pom trim
- 2 feet of chain
- 40-60 jump rings
- 4 feet of nylon cord
- 2 needle nose pliers
Start by attaching the chain to the outer edge of the pom pom trim with the jump rings. If you are using cable chain, connect a jump ring through every other link. If you are using cable chain, connect a jump ring though each link.
Once the entire length of the chain is attached to the pom pom trim, thread the cord through each jump ring.
Pick up each end of the cord and the chain will naturally fall on top of the pom pom trim. Center the pom pom and chain portion. You’ll need to attach this portion to the cord to prevent it from sliding. Add another jump ring to the first link of the chain and pierce it through the cord. Do the same with the last link.
Your new pom pom necklace is finished!!
Experiment by adding more chain, attaching different sized jump rings or using a variety of colored cord! Have fun!

oh, wow! so simple to make & so nice! thnx for posting this. x
What’s not to love:
1) their name, trivializing the harm done by the actual conquistadores way back in history, after-effects of which still plague Latin America
2) their description as “ethnic” / “tribal”, flawed by cultural appropriation and a generally euro/anglo-american-centric view of the world
They are very pretty though, and DIYing them is really a good idea!
Thank you for sharing! I am in love! Going to buy materials tomorrow!!
I don’t know where you ladies keep getting your inspiration from, but this is superb, as usual :)!
This is amazing! You guys are so inspiring and I’ve completed many of your DIY projects! Keep up the great work!!!

I just made this!!! I am in LOVE!!! Thank you so much!! I like exclamation points!!! Pics of it on my Tumblr tomorrow. Great tutorial. <3 hugs
I’m always so inspired by these DIYs! But quick question, where do I buy these materials? Does it require many stops at different stores for all the materials, considering there is a mix of hardwear, fabric, and art supplies, or is there one store where I can buy it all? Thanks!
Yes! So much Yes! This is amazing! I started making this type of jewelry and more people need to start wearing it! I love making huge pom pom earrings. I’m trying to create a lifestyle around the pom pom style and calling it Everything Sacred. Everyone should try it out!
How beautiful…truly awesome…http://www.eastmanexports.com/

Hello ! I am French and I am 12 years old . I’m crazy about this blog !!Sorry, I don’t speak English very well 😉 ! But in English class I work wel… What’ else ? I love I love I love I love I love this blog ! <3 !
The ends :p !!!
Since I first laid eyes on the pom pom necklaces on anthroplogie.com, I became obsessed with the idea of pom pom necklaces! They are way out of my price range, but with this tutorial, I feel I can give it a shot and make my own. I’ve never made my own necklace, but I am up for the challenge! I’m so excited about all the colorful combinations that I can make! Thanks so much for the tutorial!
Just made this, used a combo of big and tiny pom pom braid. Pleased with the results! Just one thing – I had to buy a smaller than 6mm braid as I found it wouldn’t thread through the jump rings. Also, does anyone know of a good way of sealing the pom pom trim, as it seems a bit messy at the moment? Keep up the good work, these tutorials are awesome.
All of this DIY jewlery has inspired me to make jewlery on the side. 🙂
HonestlyWTF we think you’re clever ! Who doesn’t love a pom-pom
Thank you for sharing and the inspiration.
Pom poms are so adorable. Very bright and colourful! 🙂
