Feria de Sevilla is being celebrated this week in Spain. The fair dates back to 1847 and is usually held 2 weeks after Semana Santa or Easter. While I was living in Sevilla years ago, I witnessed the entire city shut down for a week of casetas, drinking, dancing, and processions down the streets. Everyone is dressed in their finest traditional wardrobe: women in their faralaes, peinetas and mantón de manilas, and men in trajes corto and cordobés hats. It’s a beautiful and festive sight!

I also lived in Sevilla, and was lucky enough to be there for the wonderful feria. The most amazing thing I saw, were young children dancing flamenco in the bars til all hours of the night. It is truly a celebration where young and old come together to celebrate their heritage and religion. Oh yea, and the fireworks!! The most spectacular I have ever seen. 🙂

It is amazing, right? I lived in Sevilla years ago before we moved to Madrid and to see everyone get dressed up in these wild outfits and ride in horse drawn carriages and dance sevillanas and party for an entire week, it just blew my mind. Spain is full of these amazing moments that make you feel like someone pressed pause on life and you were transported to another place and time. I just recently did a post on Semana Santa here:

I lived in Malaga several years ago and was fortunate enough to do some traveling around Andalucia. Sevilla was the favourite of all cities that I visited. Unfortunately I was not there during the Feria, but I was able to see a traditional flamenco performance. This post definitely brings me back to sunnier days. Absolutely fabulous and gorgeous photos! Do you like the feria? I am very happy because I’m from Sevilla and recently just finished this year, I have to say that the dress worn by women not called Faralaes, called dress of Flamenca o Gitana. Faralaes is called in northern Spain but in the south and more in Seville it is not called this.

Processions during the Feria de Sevilla? Not many. I live in Sevilla and the processions are celebrating during the Semana Santa (Easter) and AFTER the Feria, from May to summer (this is a city of many holy celebrations). But during the Feria people is more dedicated to drink and dance than to pray to their saints.
Women are dressed with the typical Sevillian flamenca dress. Men dress with the Cordobes suit when they are riding a horse, but in general they dress an elegant suit jacket and shirt.
