DIY Wrap Bracelet

Posted by on

You should all know by now that we are all about stacking bracelets on our wrists. The more, the better. In fact . . . the most, the best! With that being said, we’ll show you how to master a version of the ever so popular wrap bracelet. It’s so simple and addicting, you’ll soon be churning out these wristlets with your eyes closed. Clearly this arm party train isn’t stopping and it’s about time you get on board!

You’ll need (for a double wrapped bracelet) :

* Lengths will vary depending on the size of your wrist (see comments for suggestions).

Fold the length of leather cording in half to form a loop. The loop should fit around the hex nut, which serves as the clasp. Run the tip of the waxed linen upwards along the leather cord and towards the loop. Then wrap around the base of the loop at least 5-6 times, working downwards in the opposite direction. This secures the waxed linen cord and is the start of the bracelet.

Place the ball chain along the leather cording with the end of the chain meeting the end of the wrap. Holding the ball chain against the leather cord, wrap the linen around tightly.

Continue wrapping while checking it for fit around the wrist.

When you have reached the end of the ball chain wrap the linen cording around the leather strands 2-3 more times. Tie a knot with all three strands.

Thread the hex nut through the strands and tie a second knot.

Trim with scissors and your wrap bracelet is finished!!

The materials are listed for a double wrap bracelet. For a single or triple wrapped bracelet, divide the measurements by 2 and multiply by accordingly. Experiment with crystal or other types of chain!

It’s a party!

Seriously?! This is awesome. You had me at the friendship bracelet how-to (totally made some — made my inner 10-year-old ecstatic). But SERIOUSLY! This is freakin’ awesome. Just think of what else, other than those little balls, you could use to make this with, erm, like BIG brass ball chains? Hello, Genius!

  17. {gemmifer}    July 12, 2011

I’ve known about making this sort of bracelet using individual beads but never thought of using chain… SO. MUCH. EASIER! Can’t wait to try it–thanks for another fabulous DIY!

  22. phatima pour hakimi    July 13, 2011

super easy to make, it’s so frustrating i can’t find size 1.5 mm only 1.00 mm leather or 2.00 mm. i’ll probably use the cup chain on the 1.00 mm leather cord

  23. Mírian Fernandes    July 13, 2011

  27. gab    July 13, 2011

Wow! I have been admiring these bracelets in the stores for a while now, but have never bought them because I thought that I should try to make them myself. But before I saw this DIY, I never thought it would be so easy! Thanks!

  28. Kayla Molina    July 13, 2011

Hey! So I did this and it looks great, but I need some advice. I am using diamond chain and I can’t keep it in a straight line. It wants to twirl around the bracelet so it doesn’t have very clean lines. Any advice?

  29. Catalina    July 13, 2011

Just made one :) Thanks for the awesome tutorials!

  30. Dejhana    July 13, 2011

This tutorial is great! Me and my friend just made a ton of these, except instead of using the leather chord, we used hemp that we had left over from another project. We love them.

  33. Janie    July 14, 2011

Where can I buy waxed linen cord & leather cord in a store, not online??? any general types of stores or specific would be great!! thanks :)

  34. Ingrid    July 14, 2011

Waxed linen cord can be purchased at Hobby Lobby!

  35. Contessa Dreams    July 15, 2011

Crap, I just purchased a Chan Luu wrap bracelet online, could have made my own with your guide. I’ll still try it, this is marvellous!

  36. SandyT    July 15, 2011

Gorgeous arm candy! Thank you so much….I adore the Links of London friendship bracelets and have been searching for age for a more purse friendly diy project.

  37. Valerie    July 15, 2011

I made like 6 of these tonight! Some came out too long some too short. You have to make them too long then wrap them around your wrist before tying off with the nut to make sure they fit right. ALSO, if you make loose double bracelet it can double as a pretty single choker! ENJOY!

  38. I.Ken Seymour    July 16, 2011

What a bunch of loosers! I lost count half way down the list! Go out into the real world and do something useful.

  39. Natalie    July 16, 2011

this is amazing! just made one, and it came out perfect! the only thing I did do differently is instead of the brass ball chain I substituted it with pearls and it worked out really good! looks like i bought it:)

  40. Loxicen    July 16, 2011

Just made one of these! I love it! Definitely more coming in the future :D

  41. heavenlydonna    July 17, 2011

These are pretty and simple to make …. keep sending the simple stuff.

I want to surprise my daughter with a few of these! Thanks!

If you make such a Beauty could we join some forces and make a Collection in Pink for Breast Cancer Pink Day??

  45. clancey    July 18, 2011

i just made some with pearls strung on wire so far apart that i could double-wrap a thinner leather cord between them. it’s a really rad combination of rugged and refined! awesome tutorial, i want to make, like, eighteen of them!

  46. Ema    July 18, 2011

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE these!!!! The possibilities are endless. I just whipped up my first one in no time. Improvising by using the materials I had on hand. I used suede cording, swarovski pearls, copper wire and my own lampwork bead as part of the clasp. SWEET!
I totally agree with Clancey…the combination of pearls and leather hits the mark for rugged yet refined.
I can’t thank you enough for this. I have been searching for a way to combine my beads with leather and this has got my brain in over drive right now. I’m off to make more. WooHoo!!!

  47. Kasia    July 18, 2011

Absolutely love these! However, I just made one, and it twisted all up on me, even though I kept the ball chain straight on the leather. How do I get the leather cording to lie straight – any suggestions? For others that asked, I used waxed cotton cord (not linen) and leather cord from Michaels Crafts, and I got the ball chain (3mm) at Ace Hardware.

  48. lauren    July 18, 2011

awesome tutorial! i just finished making mine. but since i couldnt go out and buy the materials and looked through my jewelry drawer and found: old embroidery thread for friendship bracelets, a rhinestone bracelet so old that it stretched out (making it easier to get the thread around), and an old faded rope bracelet. Voila, i recycled old materials to create something adorable. thanks for the tutorial! :]

  49. chris    July 19, 2011

Very inspiring, thank you. Would love some Sobergoose pieces in the future. There is not enough men’s jewellery out there! Well not that I know of anyway!?

  50. Lola    July 19, 2011

you are sooo talented and creative! Love your blog and You are such an inspiration to my art work. Thanks!

  51. B    July 19, 2011

I love these! But I tried making one and had the same twisting issue that Kaia had. How do you get these to lay straight? It is in the way you wrap the wax thread? Help!

  52. Erica    July 19, 2011

@B & @Kala, there will naturally be some twisting but not too much. perhaps the leather cord is too thin compared to the waxed linen? also, be sure to line the chain in between the folded leather cords. good luck!

  53. ladybugz1    July 20, 2011

cute. i’ll probably give it a try…i love making my own ethnic and bohemian accessories as well…
keep it up! would like to see more of those…^^,

  54. Becca    July 20, 2011

I love this idea. It’s very nice. However, I have a very small wrist and the measurements for the double wrapped bracelet were too small. I would add extra inches to both the cord and waxed cord so you don’t have to start over like me….

  55. Serah    July 21, 2011

Very awesome bracelets, i was also wondering where your globe charm bracelet is from, i feel like ive seen it before but i cant remember, thanks!

  56. Marie    July 21, 2011

THIS IS SO AWESOME! Been wanting to have an arm party for the longest time. :)

  57. Courtney    July 21, 2011

LOVE these bracelets. I have larger wrists so I had to change the lengths a little bit. I also used glass beads instead of the brass ball chain. It adds just a little more personality since there are so many different color options. This is such a wonderful idea and everyone I know will soon have one on their wrist =]

  58. MzHannah    July 21, 2011

Love Love Love all the friendship inspired necklaces and bracelets. Can’t wait to make my own to take on my upcoming trip.

  59. Diane    July 22, 2011

Oh wow! These look incredible and seem so easy to put together. Great idea.

  62. Leah    July 22, 2011

heading to the craft store right now…i must have.

  63. Roddy Jones    July 22, 2011

I have to try this. This may be fun for me to try with my girls. always trying to find something to keep them busy. ;)

  64. Nicole    July 22, 2011

Your DIY section is so lovely – I wish I made more effort to look for all the materials so that I can try them all out! This term break I will…

  65. sanchita    July 22, 2011

very very impressive……. for sure will try this <3

  66. Jen    July 24, 2011

I’m also having trouble with the leather cord not twisting. It’s a little frustrating because when it is around my wrist the ball chain faces down. Maybe I need to take it apart and play with the leather to wear it out.

  67. Laura    July 25, 2011

Where do you purchase your ball chain and leather? Do you purchase it in bulk online or in local craft store? Just wondering where the cheapest place is to find it. Thanks!

  68. Erica    July 25, 2011

@Laura, the links in the supply list (beginning of the tutorial) will direct you straight to where to buy the chain and leather!!!

  69. Anneli    July 26, 2011

I have like 4 bracelets like this already but I cant wait to actually make them myself. I have no idea they were so easy. <3 <3

  70. melissa    July 28, 2011

i also had a problem with the measurements being too small, i would definitely add a couple inches to the ball chain. the first one i made is too small to wrap twice, way too big to wrap once, too big for an anklet, and too small for a choker… =(

  71. Bridget    July 29, 2011

So much easier than I thought it would be! Thank you for sharing the how to, I cant wait to make some myself.

  72. Stephanie    July 30, 2011

I just made one of these and it turned out awesome! I do agree the measurements were a little small and I have very small wrists. I would recommend not cutting until you are done. I used black leather cord (2mm) and silver ball chain with a silver washer (from my husband’s garage) instead of a hex nut. Not as bulky. The only thing I would do different is I had very small ball chain and it would look better with ball chain that is larger diameter. Mine wouldn’t fit around twice so I just made it a single wrap. Can’t wait to make more.

  73. lily    July 31, 2011

Love it! I ‘m going to make some for my best friends…!thanks for sharing!

  74. Kyr the deer    July 31, 2011

Love your diy’s, but found it near impossible to wrap the waxed linen around the brass ball chain and leather strap without a bit of hot glue. With that extra step though, the bracelets I have made so far came out lovely. Thanks!

  75. Beth    August 1, 2011

LOVE IT! I’ve already made four or five for myself. I couldn’t find the waxed linen cords, but found some hemp cord that works just as good (plus my hippie friends LOVE that it’s natural). Didn’t have time to go to Home Depot so stumbled on the clearance rack and found lots of perfect odds n “ends” that work just as good. Plus, they’re all diferent designs, adds a great “charm”

  76. Annie    August 5, 2011

What a fabulous idea! I have a ton of colored chain and will give this a try.

  77. -A    August 5, 2011

I saw this tutorial and loved the bracelet, but didn’t have all the materials so I substituted a rubber band for the leather cord and some embroidery floss for the waxed linen cord and it actually worked! Of course it doesn’t look as polished as the one pictured above, but I think it actually passes for a decent bracelet. Thanks so much for the tutorial and inspiration :)

  78. leandra    August 5, 2011

omg! i love this i always wear bracelets! (: cool!

  79. Camille    August 7, 2011

Love this idea. Came out so great! Measurements definitely too small though. Need to add a couple inches.

  80. Tessa    August 7, 2011

love this! Though, like some others have mentioned, gotta add 2 or so inches.

  81. Nat    August 9, 2011

Absolutely LOVE these, made around 10 but had to give half away cause all my girls loved them. I also had to make them a little longer. Thanks for the inspirational DIY’s!

  82. Emily    August 14, 2011

Can anyone tell me the secret to NOT getting them all twisted??? When I make these the ball chain twists around with the cord and it does not lay flat when worn (like in the photos). Anyone else have this issue— and a solution? Thanks

  83. Chelsea    August 16, 2011

so easy to do , and they so look store-bought!
    makes a great gift :)

  84. LL    August 17, 2011

This is my first attempt: http://campl.us/dMzJ — It’s a little twisted, but the second one I made, I made sure I only rotated the wax linen cord so the entire bracelet is pretty straight. Plus I like the wax linen cord because you can mold it to go the way you want if it does become twisted. I think other materials are not as pliable. And the last benefit of the wax linen cord is that it is a little “sticky” so you really don’t have to tie knots–just make sure you wrap tightly. The measurements on the tutorial is perfect for a wrist size of 5 1/4 inches.

  85. Kaitlyn    August 17, 2011

The measurements may be a little small for some wrists, so just be careful to measure your actual wrist size! But great tutorial!!

  86. Marlene    August 18, 2011

Thanks for sharing this. I’m definitely going to try this. So awesome!

  87. kasey    August 18, 2011

i have always wanted to change my look but i dont know how to change so fast

  88. Bruno    August 19, 2011

I like the photos, what camera and lenses did you use?
Very nice macros; And bracelets are great too in fact

  89. Anna    August 19, 2011

I’m with Emily – all twisted! I will confess to using embroidery thread as I couldn’t find the waxed linen cord, but I don’t think that was the problem – as it was the little balls moving between the 2 bits of leather that were a problem. Mine certainly don’t look as nice as the pics – but still look good as I used black leather, 2 colours of thread, with silver balls as I could only get stainless steel hex nuts.

  90. Donna C    August 22, 2011

Quick question. I was not able to keep the leather cord from twisting so the ball chain is not clearly evident. Any ideas on how to straighten it out?

Thanks for the great tut. I just saw the inspiration piece here on vacation and was shocked at the prices! This will do well.

  91. Maggie    August 23, 2011

instead of the wax linen cord, can i use string that would be used to make friendship bracelets?

  92. Rebecca    August 23, 2011

Wow. My stumble upon account brought us to this page. My sister and I saw it and left immediately to get the supplies. We’ve made 3 so far and we love them! Thanks for the idea! :) We LOVE it!!

  93. Stella Kodi    August 26, 2011

this is so lovely, I am inspired and will attempt to make it…When I do, I’ll prob feature this for inspiration

  94. Alexandra    August 28, 2011

This is a fantastic DIY and I really enjoyed making it
    Thank you!

  95. Barbied9    August 28, 2011

@Donna C., I had the same problem! Easy to make, but I wanted it like the pic, where it doesn’t twist.. did you find a solution? Thanks!

  96. Olivia    August 31, 2011

Where did you get that gold wrap bracelet that you’re wearing in the picture above??

  97. Lila Kydd    August 31, 2011

love it! after going to the hardware store and then bead store, i made three bracelets in about half an hour! they’re lovely! i think for the fastener, I am going to switch out the hex with a pretty wooden button–very ethnic. Thanks for sharing this link!

  106. Liselotte    September 12, 2011

I arrived to this page from StumbleUpon this morning and by this afternoon I had my own wrap bracelet! I love it, I can’t wait to make a LOT more of these :)

  107. Stacey-McG    September 16, 2011

I am completely obsessed with your DIY section. I just finished making a bunch of these and I am so surprised at how easy it was and how many variations you can have. So many great gift ideas! I am currently attempting the Woven Chain Bracelet so pretty!!!

  108. Laura    September 20, 2011

How small are your wrists because your measurements ran small for me.

  109. michele    September 23, 2011

Love this but when I made it it was twisted and didn’t lie straing on my wrist–what did I do wrong? :(

  110. Emma&Lizzy    September 23, 2011

These bracelets are so cute and easy to make! You can substitute the leather cord for black “Primary Cable Wire” from Lowe’s or any home appliance store. It’s very flexible and cheap!

  111. yuanda    October 2, 2011

wait are these supposed to wrap around your wrist two times? and would someone please tell me where to get supplies needed to make these bracelets? :o

    a stupid man

  112. Beverley    October 4, 2011

thanks for that it was very interesting and creative, would like to now more

  113. Serena    October 9, 2011

About the easiest and coolest bracelet ive made! I love your blog!

  114. Miss Lego    October 9, 2011

Hmm it’s not hard to do after all…great. thanks for sharing and making life so much easier in terms of hand decoration :)

  115. Mz.Fashionista    October 12, 2011

Check out http://www.mydirtyearth.com if your looking to buy one at a reasonable price. They sell them for like $69 for a 4 wrap one, and the quality is even better in person. I would definitely recommend them if you just dont have the time to make them, but great job!

  116. aA    October 12, 2011

I have made a couple and they twist on me…still look OK, but i am not happy with the twist…What do y’all think I’m doing wrong? Am I wrapping it too tight? Am I WRAPPED TOO TIGHT?

    Some say “no”…

  117. Andrea Graham    October 20, 2011

Fell in love with these bracelets as soon as I saw them and ran out to make one. If you live in the US, you can make the crystal chain version using materials from your local Michael’s Craft Stores. I used the 2mm brown leather cord from the leather craft section, found crystal chain from the jewelry section and the replaced the waxed linen cord with waxed cotton cord from the cord section. I just wanted to ask something. Does anyone know how to make macrame bracelets? I have a picture that seems like a macrame bracelet but I’m not really sure cause there are like five colours in it so i couldn’t figure it out. I’m gonna post a link so if anyone could help me It’d make me super happy!!!

Just finished making 3 single wraps using rhinestone chain and hemp chord on a cotton twisted chord (that looks like leather). Found it all at Michael’s, but used silver hex nuts from the garage. They came out great, but the rhinstone chain was A PAIN! The rhinestone links would slide close and then far apart. For the right look, I wanted them close together. It was really hard to keep it that way while wrapping the hemp chord. And when finished, the chain wants to spread out. I don’t think this will keep it’s look and shape after repeated wearings, but I am hopeful. If I make them again, I will need to re-think the materials. Might use a thicker chord for wrapping so I can let the rhinestones spread apart.

WOW!!! Such a great idea, it look wonderful, thanks for sharing :)

  125. Olivia    November 7, 2011

i just did this project and it turned out great! thank you so much for sharing with us.

As for the twisting, I think the problem is using the 1.5mm thin leather. When I compare the 1.5mm that I have to the leather in the picture, I think that the size they used might have been a larger diameter. Perhaps that’s why they seem to be lying so flat. Mine are virtual cork screws.

  127. Susan    November 12, 2011

I love these bracelets and definitely want to make some! The only problem is that I’m vegan, and I don’t use leather or suede or any other animal products. Do you know of a suitable substitution for the leather cord that I can use?

I appreciate, lead to I discovered exactly what I was looking for. You’ve ended my four day long hunt! God Bless you man. Have a great day. Bye

My daughter and I are making these as Christmas gifts to give to her friends and cousins. We have made a few changes with things we had in our craft stuff, like, instead of the metal chain bead we are using plastic beads that you can buy by the yard real cheap, and we are using embroidery floss to wrap the beads on to leather lacing that I had. I still made a few with some silver nuts that my husband had in the garage, but the others we used larger beads and bracelet clasp on the ones we did not use leather with. They turned out really nicely!!

What’s the best resource for great bright colors of waxed linen and rhinestone chain etc?

  131. Courtney    November 29, 2011

I made these and love the idea but I am having a hard time keeping it from twisting….thoughts?

  132. julie    December 2, 2011

Oh my gosh, love this idea! We actually sell some bracelets that look like this at my work but it seems that by doing this you can make a lot more for a lot less money.

  133. Lizzie    December 10, 2011

I’ve been looking for this type of information for my research. Thanks

  134. Liz    December 10, 2011

Just made my first bracelet. It was super easy and looks so great! Can’t wait to make more!

  135. Heather    December 17, 2011

I just made a bunch of these as stocking stuffers for all the boys in my neighborhood since I made rolled fabric rosette clips for all the girls! I used some liquid bead fix at the ends where i wrapped the waxed linen cord for added security. LOVE! I even made one for my husband =)

  136. Cleone    December 18, 2011

Great tutorial! I just made my first one but it took forever because of the same twisting problem that others had. I found that the reason it twisted so much was because I was wrapping the cord too tightly around. On my last attempt, I wrapped it really loose and it hardly twisted! As mentioned before there is some natural twisting but the beads line up.

  137. Saam    December 28, 2011

Completely irrelephant but this was posted on my birthday :D

    Neat bracelet, too :3

You’re not just a jewellery maker hey? Those photies are fab – I presume it’s an SLR camera? The focal depth makes those photos shine – I wish I could get some images like that on my blog – don’t suppose we could do each other favours? ;)

  139. Amy    January 8, 2012

I tried it and it worked out pretty good. I used embroidery floss, though because that’s what I had :)

  140. suzy    January 8, 2012

love the idea. made the bracelet but the measurements for the brass ball chain is for people with very small wrists? luckily i have a small wrist so it fit but barley. i would recommend adding and inch to the brass ball chain. thankss

  141. Esther    January 8, 2012

Awesome idea!! I recently bought a couple on-sale at the mall, and really wanted to buy more, but then thought I could make them somehow. I forgot about my “mission” until I saw this! Thanks to you, and thanks to Stumbleupon for reminding me of my crafting mission! LOL… can’t wait to try this! Hopefully my bracelet comes out nice like yours! :)

Unfortunately this was not as easy as it looked for me! Repeatedly made it either too big or too small… :) And the cord kept unraveling after I had finished it. Bummer, since it was so pretty! Good luck to everyone else though…

  143. Dottie    January 20, 2012

  162. yaya    March 13, 2012

besides the waxed cord, what the other type of cord can we use?

  163. Erica    March 13, 2012

@yaya, you can use other cords but waxed cord is the best because it’s sticky and will hold the beads in place better than anything else. hope that helps!
