Honestly WTF

Dear, Oh Deer

Posted by on

Why didn’t I think to DIY painted antlers after my trip to Wyoming, where antlers are aplenty? Until my next trip to the Great Plains, these beauties from Milwaukee-based artist Cassandra Smith just might have to hold me over. (Just in case you’re wondering, deer and elk shed their antlers naturally each year.)

My husband has been itching to throw a set of antlers on the wall and until now, I’ve always said no. I might definitely change my tune if he agrees to throw up one of these beauties instead. Absolutely amazing!

what do you do with them? hmm this would be a fun DIY if you made it into a necklace tree or something…

You could always paint branches that resemble the shape of antlers, for a vegan-friendly, non-animal-parts alternative. But I think the antlers look awesome.

Those are beyond awesome. I live right near a forest full of buck. I’ll be keeping an eye for some of these to DIY!

I’m in for jewelry organizer too! And as far as I know, you don’t have to hunt the deer to make it! My boyfriend’s grandparents are feeding deer and each year they sell the horns for medical purposes (it grows fast apparently). nice colors! I can see my rings there :)

I think that this would be cute with some moose antlers, too. I bet that project would take forever, though!! What a cool idea.

What fabulous antlers! They’re of course lovely in their natural state but simply gorgeous when embellished.

    Dear Erica and Lauren!
You girls are amazing!! With these incredible finds, I never imagined some of them even existed! Great job and your blog is such a great resource of anything beautiful. WTF…Encyclopedia, so to speak.
I so <3 the antlers, I would put one or two in white frames in my house and it would totally transform its identity.
    Thank you!

They are very nice looking. I like the color choices, however, I do prefer natural above all painted antlers. ;)

I’ve been wanting to do this for awhile now. I’m waiting for my dad to find some in the woods.

I know that this is a little late, but as a Minnesota girl from up by Canada, I feel the need to share my deer knowledge with you, : )

Male deer grow a new set of antlers each year. Each year, deer grow more and more spikes on their antlers (that’s what makes the antlers look like branches). So, the more spikes/branches the older the deer.

Each winter, male deer’s antlers stop growing because mating season is done and they’re going to begin growing newer and bigger antlers to look better to the ladies. So, antlers stop growing, get itchy because their new antlers are growing up under the old ones, and deer rub their heads against trees until their old antlers fall off.

So, that’s deer antlers in a nutshell. I hope that puts any of your hesitant creative minds at rest and ready to paint!

These are awesome! I have a few sheds around my house and have been looking for some things to do with them, this is perfect!

I know nothing about paint though. What is the best paint to use for the project?
