Single strands of pearl and crystals were seen throughout Thakoon’s über feminine Spring 2014 collection. Much to our delight, a handful of coats were adorned with crystal “belts” around the backside. It’s a chic way to add a bit of feminine flair to a coat and better yet, recreating the look will take you less than 30 minutes. Sweet!
You’ll need:
- a coat with vertical or horizontal seams
- a vintage crystal necklace
- a piece of paper and pen
- wirecutters
- a needle
- thread
When picking a coat to use, choose one with a horizontal seam across the backside or symmetrical vertical seams. This will make it seem like the chain is coming out of the seam, like a belt. My coat had both but I decided to sew into the horizontal seam since the vertical seams were too far apart. Unclasp the necklace and hold it up against the backside of the coat. Locate roughly where you want to place the chain and trim the necklace with wire clippers.
Take a piece of paper and line it up along the middle of the jacket. With a pen, mark where you would want to sew on one side of the necklace.
Thread the needle with a matching thread color, double knot the end and pull it up from the inside of the coat. Place the first crystal onto the seam and sew between the first and second stone. Knot it from the inside of the jacket.
Flip the paper over to the left. Mark the same distance from the middle of the jacket and sew on the other side of the necklace.
Your crystal chain is attached!
And your Thakoon-inspired coat is ready to wear.

Not my favorite of your DIYs. I think that is a gorgeous coat. After having an unnecessary element tacked on, the coat looks cheaper. The most pieces you mentioned in the Thakoon collection have additions look like they’re meant to be there.

Such a great idea! Thank you for some great inspiration!
Folks,, this is one of those really impractical – even dumb – ideas!
You know: it LOOKS like it would be cool,, but in real life:
a) it gets caught on any fabric furniture your back is touching
b) it gets hooked on hands or fingers or gloves or sleeves of anyone giving you a hug
c) uncomfortable on your lower back when you are leaning against chair-back, wall, whatever
Nice coat! Love DIY! It amazed me! Thanks for your sharing!
