Best Of NYFW Fall 2016, Part 1

With New York Fashion Week underway in record breaking freezing temperatures, I couldn’t be happier seeing experimental layering, new knitwear silhouettes and luxurious outerwear on the runway. These are our favorite collections thus far:

Sies Marjan : Dries Van Noten’s former creative director Sander Lak debuted his first collection yesterday and had everyone abuzz with his feminine and youthful ease. Pretty pastels and abstract floral prints were offset by sophisticated neutrals and 90s inspired silk cargo pants and skirts are sure to be on many wish lists come fall. Can’t wait to see more from Sander!

A Détacher: Mona Kowalska combined elements of “cowboy, biker and oversize” into a collection that left us all aspiring to layer the A Détacher way. We’re loving the pops of bubble gum pink under sweater skirts and tailored blazers worn over long tunics and trousers. And the knit head wraps worn under beanies? Copying, stat.

R13: Despite debuting at fashion week this season, Chris Leba’s R13 has already developed a cult following since it’s launch in 2009. With 20 years under his belt at Ralph Lauren, it’s no wonder his passion lies in the American classics – and for fall, it’s all about 90s grunge. A silk overlay dresses, repurposed leather jackets, cotton cashmere graphic tees and unique denim cuts, like a pant-skirt hybrid in distressed denim had me singing to Kurt . . . come as you are.

Hellessy: Charlotte Rampling, the personification of 60s gamine, was the inspirational starting point for Sylvie Millstein’s relaxed, boyish direction for fall. Off the shoulder tops, blouses with exaggerated sleeves, tailored jumpsuits and shearling coats are riding the trends – but not without that charming, Hellessy twist.

Ulla Johnson : Ulla does what Ulla knows best and that’s tickling us pink, season after season, with her boho printed dresses and embroidered blouses with handwoven tassels. The ultimate California uniform. So it was refreshing to see her inject such rich, luxurious and cooler weather appropriate pieces into her fall collection like velvet waist-tie overalls, heavy weighted Victorian dresses and layered knitwear – all in wonderfully inspiring color combinations.

Tome: A perfectly cut out fluid dress paired with undyed shearling sourced from a Vermont farm. Upcycled Levi’s reworked into vintage inspired patchwork denim. And overstock fabric became signature menswear inspired shirting, tied and draped in all the right places. We love the purposeful and thoughtful intentions behind Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin’s beloved Tome. It translates into the confident woman (with attitude!) that we aspire to be.
