A couple of weeks ago, we celebrated FNO by DIYing bow ties and neckties from scraps of denim at Madewell – because honestly, who isn’t borrowing a bit of inspiration from the boys this season? Today we’ll be showing you, who may have missed the event, how to DIY a bow tie with luxurious, Dolce & Gabbana-inspired velvet. Before you know it, you’ll be well suited and ready to channel your inner Marlene Dietrich!
You’ll need:
- a 6″ x 3.5″ piece of velvet
- a 0.75″ x 2.5″ piece of velvet
- a 1″ pin back
- a glue gun
- a ruler
- a pen
Start by drawing a vertical line and a horizontal line, dividing the rectangle into 4 equal quarters. Pinch the intersecting lines and pick up the velvet.
Flip the piece over, while still pinching the backside, and place a drop of hot glue in the center. Fold the velvet in half lengthwise, pressing the two sides closed. Place a drop a of glue on backside, along the vertical line and close to the folded edge. Fold the fabric back and press the two sides closed. This is the accordion-like fold that will be repeated.
Place another drop of glue on the front side and fold the fabric closed. Continue the steps until both sides.
Turn the bow on its backside and glue the tip of the velvet strip to the center. Wrap the strip around the bow and seal it closed.
Glue a pin back to the back of the bow.
Your velvet bow tie is finished!
Boy, oh boy . . .

i absolutely resent women who can pull of super masculine accessories. maybe since it’s a bow, it won’t make my athletic-broad shoulder-inverted triangle body look so boy-ish? 🙂

Looks amazing! Are the raw edges of the velvet not finished in any way, just left to fray? Maybe I missed a step.

I love the jacket! Where can I find?
I LOVE this diy! Sadly, I was out of glue for my glue gun, so i just used a needle and thread. Took some elbow grease, but it worked! This is a great project for old jeans that you couldn’t bear to part with. Just cut em up and follow the directions! Thank you, honestlywtf.com!
Hi! I loved your bow tie so had to have a go myself, I have included a link below to my attempt! I love your projects and although keep a folder of loads of projects I want to try keep coming back to yours! Keep up the good work!
