Landscape painter of the West, Glenn Dean, has notoriously used Altoids tins to sketch and practice his piece before putting brush to canvas. He, as well as many other artists who also utilize the iconic Althoids tin for an on-the-go watercolor palette, was the inspiration for Heidi Annalise to try this en plein air method for herself. A few years ago, she left her government job in Washington D.C. and moved back to her home state of Colorado to spend her days exploring the wilderness and nature - all while capturing her experiences in her do-it-yourself Altoids paint kit. To make your own kit, Heidi suggests lining the bottom of the tin with a small piece of palette paper. She sources small wooden panels from Michaels, which are attached to the lid with packing tape, and uses them as her canvas. Bring along a few tiny paintbrushes and you're ready to next outdoor adventure!
