In Sanskrit, the word “kantha” means rags. For centuries, Bengali women have taken their discarded saris and sewn them together with a simple running stitch, to create blankets. Hand & Cloth is a social enterprising ministry in Bangladesh that provides living wage, school scholarships, and a loving community to young at-risk women. Each woman is paid per-piece to stitch kanthas from recycled sari material. These beautiful quilts make the perfect gift for that someone special.

These are gorgeous. I’m assuming they are meant to be worn like a shawl. They look so cozy that way.

Takes me back many years. I am originally from Bombay, India and I remember my mum having 2 of these made out of identical saris for my sister and myself. We had them for over 15 years before they fell apart (they had to be handwashed and hung to dry).
So thanks for this post that takes me back…!!
