Our Exquisite Corpse

LN-CC is now carrying a limited collection of beaded skulls from artist Catherine Martin of Our Exquisite Corpse. Working in collaboration with the Huichol tribe of Western Mexico, Catherine designs each resins skull using traditional symbols and patterns. The beadwork is incredibly intricate and exceptional – I’d love to own one of these unique pieces of art!

I appreciate and admire the beautiful bead work, the long hours to create them, the intricate details and the exciting use of color.Truly unique and beautiful pieces. From the back, as you present them originally, it seems they would be very desirable to a broad audience. Though I wonder, once it is discovered they are skulls, how much of that audience fades away?

While these are stunning, they are not based on huichol art, they ARE hucihol art. Furthermore they are not designed by someone, but created individually by the huichol artist, the patterns are exactly the same as the ones they use. I love the creation of Huicholes, however I can’t avoid thinking that while these skulls are beautiful, they are an unrightful appropriation of their work, specially when they are priced at $700 dollars. Knowing the artist /craftmans firsthanded I can deduce that most of the profit is not going to them. These skulls have been part of mexican folk art for decades! The only thing that changes is that instead of using the traditional wooden based, these are resin. I love this site but selling them as artist pieces is just wrong. The artists are the craftsmen.

@Elissa, does that mean you know where I can get these same creations at a more realistic price? I’d love to purchase one from the Huichol craftsmen directly if there is a channel to do so.

@Liz, there are many boutiques on line where you can get Huichol sculptures, however most of them help maintain the status quo of impoverished artisans. Most of the international market is not fair trade, (and maybe all of it). The best way to get these pieces is to buy them directly from them, (please without bargaining with the price they set )in Mexico, Jalisco and Nayarit regions. Most of Huichol people have never left the country, let alone have American visas.
One of the legit places you can buy them is the MAP museum, http://www.tiendamap.com/
I f you want to know more, you can hit me up at eliss_mm@hotmail.com I am not a seller, I don’t have a business regarding Huichol art but I can give you more info about these pieces and contact you with some artists.

@maria, yes the price is fair when it is going to the craftsmen that produce them, or at least in a fair porcentage. This is not the case.

I’m sorry, but I don’t see the collaboration between the artist and the Huicholes, this is a 100% Mexican handcraft and it has been that for so many years. The artist just called it “collaboration” in order to steal their work without legal complications.
