Alaska

Several weeks ago I fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting Alaska. I walked through a forest and enjoyed the new growth of ferns, hiked to Exit Glacier, attended one of the most beautiful weddings, ate freshly caught salmon, and enjoyed many hours in a car driving up and down Highway 1. I loved the majestic mountains, glaciers, wildlife, fields of wild dandelions, water skiing, fishing, clean fresh air, and 19 hours of sunlight so much so that I plan on going back every summer. As I overheard someone summing it up perfectly: “if this isn’t heaven we are half way there.”

My god it looks beautiful! I’ve always wanted to go to Alaska too (in the summer, of course) but people look at me kind of sideways when I say so. Thanks for conforming what I’ve always suspected.

I visited Alaska a couple summers ago- we started in Fairbanks and made our way down to Anchorage for a weeklong cruise. Honestly, the best trip of my life. Also, I couldn’t help but notice, I think we went to the same Indian village- the pictures of the small cabin on the ground and on stilts? I remember there were huskies that ran the Ididarod there. Small world if so!

I went there for a 1 week land tour and 1 week cruise 8 years ago. It was amazing! Of course, I was 15 at the time so I would love to go back and visit places I didn’t go to. The glacier was amazing, and I loved the river rafting. Summer is definitely the best time to go- although I couldn’t sleep because it’s day time almost all day. Other problem- couldn’t find Coke- only Pepsi! lol

Hi, I am glad that you had a wonderful “visit” to Alaska. I live in Anchorage. I will start by saying that this is not a place that i planned on living in and really I don’t view it as a place “to call home”. The reason why I say this, is because with your love of fashion you would go bananas here, because fashion or having the sense of fashion is completely obsolete here. We were deemed as “the worst dressed and worst hair of America” recently, and it is ever so true.

I really enjoy your blog and your sense of fashion. Don’t change that. I am glad that you enjoyed Alaska, there is a lot of beautiful land and scenery. But you have to be a die-hard outdoor person, who loves 9 long months of cold and darkness to live here. Trust me, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have to…I would leave tomorrow.

Lovely photos! I spend every July in southeast Alaska (my boyfriend is from there and has kept a cabin in a small village) and I can say that there is really no place else in the world like it. So gorgeous, and the perfect place to go to get away from the chaos of every day life.

I live in Anchorage, and I have to completely disagree with Kelly’s above comment. I love fashion, art, music, and everything generally associated with “culture” and deemed to be present outside our state, but I have to say– Anchorage especially has hidden pockets of all of those things, you just have to look a little harder! I’ve lived here since I was really little, and although it’s not a place I plan on living forever, Anchorage has a lot to do and see that has nothing to do with mountains, sled dogs, or the “great outdoors.” Great boutiques, AMAZING food, and hey, I consider myself pretty well dressed. I wish people would see that side of it!

I love ALASKA! I lived there for 5 1/2 years in Fairbanks. Yes. It gets SUPER cold -50 below and it is dark for 9 months…but it is beautiful and amazing and the summers, though short are amazinggggg! Alaska is different than any place I have been too and I miss it! It def takes a certain person to live there, but if you love the outdoors-GO! and if you just want to do summer-GO! 🙂

@Holley, I totally agree with you Alaska has it all. I did see some nice little boutiques in downtown Anchorage, I think one was called Octopus Gallery, all local handmade designs. I also saw culture and art everywhere I looked. I recently posted a local Alaskan artists on the blog, V Rae- https://honestlywtf.com/art/v-rae/ And as I said in the post I attended one of the most beautiful wedding ever, and that bride had serious style and she was an Alaskan native. Next summer when I go back to Alaska I would love for you to show me around!!

I went to Exit Glacier about 15 years ago on a trip to visit family in Seward. Alaska is definitely one of my favorite places; I loved the fact that the last time I was there, the sun wasn’t even setting at 11:30pm. That and lots of unspoiled wilderness and hikes without running into tons of Griswalds like here at home (Seattle).

Alaska is a great place to visit from June 15th – August 30th. After that the colder, darker days quickly set in. But if you like the cold, come to visit Anchorage in February/March to see some unique Alaska winter sports! If you ever intend to stay, be prepared for 6 months of winter/snow each and every year. Beginning in April it slowly fades and warms to 55-70 degrees (high temps in Anchorage that last a month or 2), then August and darkness again… and so it goes every year. June 21 longest day, December 21 shortest day… The slow roller coaster of daylight to darkness and warm to cold, again and again, etc.

I’ve been here 50+ years now and so look forward to some heat from our summers, as brief as they are!
