I’m sorry but something about this makes me uncomfortable…I think it is the “exoticization” of the indigenous culture, with no real appreciation for the cultural background or meaning that their clothes and symbols have. Basically it’s using them to satisfy a need for stunning visual imagery in high-end fashion.

Wowzers!! This reminds me of Kazakhstan, I was there two years ago and it’s beautifully bright and colorful just like this! I must visit!

Love this photos, love my country with such cultural diversity and beautiful landscapes. Where the photos were taken is cusco.

I posted these photos on one of my blogs as well a while back, and received a similar response re: exoticism, but my friend reminded me that this is exactly what it’s about when you’re backpacking…you wear all these wild, funky, outrageous clothes that you pick up for 10 cents from local markets. and you get to be creative and dress up like a crazy every day! i also feel that stunning visual imagery using both fashion and culture are harmonious rather than exploitative in this instance. props to testino – i love this spread :)

i think although the “exoticism” of cultures isn’t right…mario testino is peruvian and these photographs were taken in peru…
