Mojave Desert

In October I made my first trip out to Joshua Tree, and it’s amazing surroundings, to celebrate my birthday with my boyfriend and our dog Gordos. In just 3 days and 2 nights we hiked Joshua Tree National Park, camped in Jumbo Rocks, made a quick stop at the World Famous Crochet Museum, experienced glamping at the Hicksville trailer park hotel, and ended the trip with a visit to the glorious Salvation Mountain. Apparently Leonard Knight, the man behind this colorful mountain, has recently become sick and there has been talk of his life’s work being torn down. Though I’m not a religious person, I can appreciate his artistic dedication.

Green Village

Green Village, founded by jewelry designer John Hardy and designed by his daughter Elora, is a community of sustainable and ecological houses sitting along the Ayung River in Bali. Each of the homes are made entirely of bamboo, from Bali-based bamboo and construction company Ibuku, from the window frames to the staircase, tables, chairs, floors, and even the cabinets and the walls. Did you know that with very little attention or additional resources, a bamboo shoot can become a structural column within three years and that house could stand strong for a lifetime? Honestly, amazing.

Moscow

How lucky we feel to have been able to experience Moscow for the first time last week, with our friends at Kira Plastinina as our gracious hosts. With just a handful of days in Russia’s historic capital, we actually managed to squeeze in a bit of it all: taking in every square inch of beauty at St. Basil’s Cathedral, shopping for matryoshka dolls, fur hats and antiques, dining at the legendary Cafe Pushkin, seeing Swan Lake at the newly renovated Bolshoi Theater, waking up to the first snowfall of the season, spending hours exploring The Armory’s lavish treasures inside The Kremlin, visiting the fashion darlings behind Buro 24/7, admiring The Red Square for the umpteenth time, touring Kira‘s headquarters during Moscow Fashion Week, and buying a single metro ticket to stop off at all of the most exquisite underground stations. We’re still reeling from the stunning splendor and veritable generosity of Moscow . . . and honestly can’t wait to return.

The Nam Hai

Posted by on

I’m so fired up about my upcoming trip to Vietnam and Cambodia this December, I can hardly stand it. While researching places to visit, I stumbled across this paradisal resort near Hoi An which boasts 100 striking villas along the palm-fringed sands of White China Beach. The Nam Hai might just have to be a stop on my Southeast Asian journey. Have you been to Vietnam? I’d love to hear some of your recommendations!

Levi’s + Maine = Fall 2012

Posted by on

For their fall collection Levi’s turned to a handful of craftsmen and artisans, of the breathtaking state of Maine, for inspiration. So when they asked me and a few other editors to join them on a road trip along the coast of the Pine Tree State, I knew it would be a trip of a lifetime. From Portland to Deer Isle, the four day adventure was unforgettable: stopping at the China Sea Marine Trading Co to visit the man behind maritime antiques and nautical salvages, lunching on the ubiquitous lobster roll, witnessing handcrafted blankets and scarves being made at Swans Island Blankets, feeling the craftsmanship behind a freshly made chair at Windsor Chairmakers, snacking on a beautiful array of fresh vegetables and cheese at Salt Water Farm, meeting Yoshiko Wada, the artist responsible for introducing the art of Japanese shibori to the US, at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and finally admiring Marlinespike Chandlery‘s impressive collection of decorative knots, lanyards and ropes. It was obvious why the colors, materials, textures, techniques, and traditions of Maine influenced the little, yet important, details from this season’s offerings. Be sure to look out for some special collaborations with Swans Island Blankets and Marlinespike Chandlery, for their Made Here collection, in your local neighborhood store. Thank you for showing me all that is beautiful in Maine, Levi’s – I can’t wait to return!
