DIY Fendi Frill

Posted by on

It was love at first sight when we laid eyes on the amazing oversized, billowy, ruffled frills adorning the Fall 2010 runway looks at Fendi. We immediately wanted one and just couldn’t imagine having to wait another several months to actually see these frills materialize. With some research, persistence, and umpteen botched attempts, we finally figured out a fail-proof pattern. And obviously, we’re sharing it with you!

3 Designers 3 DIYs

Posted by on

New York, London, Milan and Paris – for weeks we closely followed each of the Fall 2011 collections and wow, were they inspiring! We, along with two of our favorite DIY bloggers, took on the challenge of picking some items from the runways and went about recreating them with our own creative twists. Lauren and I were smitten with the ruffled frills seen at Fendi, Jenni of I Spy DIY was charmed by the metallic oxfords seen at Dolce & Gabbana, and Geneva of A Pair and A Spare was taken with the textured mini skirts seen at Balmain. 3 designers and 3 DIYs, here we go!

DIY Bleach Tie Dye

Posted by on

Last summer, we were obsessed with shibori indigo tie dying. No, really . . . we just about dyed anything white in sight. So when Free People asked us to include a DIY in their guest blogger series, we knew a new tie dye project was absolutely in order. And as the weather is beginning to warm up, what better time than now to start experimenting with reverse tie dye using bleach! Black tees and tops: watch out!

You’ll need:
- a 100% cotton black shirt (we used this Free People tee)
- a few cups of bleach
- a bucket
- a pair of gloves
- a few rubber bands
- 2 flat shaped objects used for binding

DIY Minaudière

Posted by on

I have an awful habit of losing sunglasses. Needless to say, I’ve accumulated an impressive collection of sunglass cases over the years. Recently we’ve discovered that these abandoned containers can easily by re-purposed into fabulous mini clutches! Inspired by those spotted during Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks, we made a super simple minaudière with just a few tools and a fancy piece of hardware.

You’ll need:
- a hard sunglass case
- a drawer pull
- a wrench -
- a bolt cutter (a bolt cutter is a really useful tool to own for DIY projects and is quite inexpensive!)
- a drill
- a twisted drill bit

DIY Bolo Tie

Posted by on

Many years ago, we might have shunned the idea of wearing bolos but nowadays we couldn’t be more obsessed with these western neckties! Worn pulled up against a buttoned up collared shirt or loose as a necklace, bolos are our must have accessory of the moment. Inspired by recent street style sightings, magazine editorials, and a few designers who have embraced this western inspired trend, we put together an easy bolo tie tutorial that we hope you’ll love.

You’ll need:
- a cutting board
- a sharp knife, drill
- a tapered stopper cork
- super glue
- 40 inches of leather or suede cord
- a button earring
- an open-acorn push nut
- a pair of closed-acorn push nuts

DIY Braided Hex Nut Bracelet

Posted by on

We’re nuts for nuts. Is there a more versatile and inexpensive DIY component than a hex nut from the hardware store? You can imagine our excitement when we first discovered Philip Crangi’s Giles & Brother Hex Collection. Honestly, nuts braided into jewelry is WTF genius! With a few items that we always seem to have lying around, we tackled the technique and made our own spine-like braided hex nut wrap bracelet.
