Waves & Curls

I could never wrap my head around why my friends, who are blessed with gorgeous, bouncing curls, would even think about straightening their hair. This is coming from the naturally stick straight haired girl who got herself a perm several years ago. True story. It actually turned out beautifully, despite the noxious and arduous experience. Alas, the grass is always greener – we’re always wanting what we can’t have. So of course, I’m contemplating ditching the curling iron for another visit to the salon for some permanent waves. Change is a good thing, no?

I LOVE this idea! You should totally do it – all these pictures are amazingly beautiful. Curling irons never hold the curl in my hair so I think I would HAVE to go with something more permanent 🙁

I’ve tried to curl my hair and million times and it always falls out, my hairs to thin and straight. If love a perm, didnt know you could get one that doesn’t make you look like an 80’s throwback or old woman?

  3. Having curly-wavy hair isn’t so dreamy and bohem. There are days that my hair are like a nut’s one, curls everywhere, even in my eyes. In other words, I am like a lion strolling in the city.

  5. I have naturally curly hair and for two years, I straightened it every day. But now I embrace my curl and I love it! It definitely has good days where it looks perfect efortlessly, but there are absolutely days where it is a frizz ball. However, I supose that is what makes it unique. I say go for it! Get that perm!

Oooh, if you do it you have to show us the before and after! I have stick straight hair myself and ever since I can remember I’ve wanted curls. I got my perm when I was 10. Yes, ten years old. No, not smart, not cute. Still lusting after the waves and curls though…

Just remember when getting a permanent all the harsh chemicals they put in your hair. God gave you straight hair for a reason and after you damage your hair with a permanent, it cannot be undone, no matter how hard you try, even with all the products in the world. Plus you risk shocking your hair so bad, it may fall out. Yes, I understand the allure of waves of curl, but you were given the hair you have for a reason and it makes you shine with your natural born beauty and grace! ツ

I have naturally wavy hair and I can say, with years of experience dealing with textured hair, that the models in these photos are not realistic representations at all. They have been worked on by the best professionals in the beauty industry, and some of them don’t actually have naturally textured hair. Believe me, if I had some world renowned stylist coming to my house every morning to do my hair I would look pretty dreamy and ethereal, too. Alas, I just have my own two very amateurish hands, and the results are at best, good, at worst, a disaster. Throw in the humidity, rain or wind when I walk out the door, and I resemble Medusa. Just as most women do not look like Giselle when sporting a bikini at the beach, most curly haired women do not resemble the models in these photos at all. It is a fantasy. Really embracing your textured hair is a process of good products, an appropriate cut, time, patience and the cooperation of mother nature. For me, the Universe aligns these factors perfectly about maybe ten times a year, the rest of the 355 require a ponytail.

@Julie AMEN SISTER! I was just thinking the same thing. If I had a half ton of extensions added in and a pro styling me I would love my curls too! The thing about curly hair is that you can do the exact same styling routine from day to day with wildly differing outcomes. This really sucks if you have an important night or event, you can’t be sure it will turn out well. I think that’s one reason curly girls go straight, you know exactly how it will turn out if you blow it out!

I have lots of waves and curls and have also blow dried and straightened but for the last year have also just left mine, everyone loves it, some days are def not good days, wow wake up with huge hair, good old mousse does help and there are so many bandeau s and goodies for hair, I have become quite experimental,so finally after 53 years I am enjoying what I got naturally 🙂

  22. I love a good curl. I like them more when they are messy, beachy and windswept looking. I think they are the most sexy this way because if the curl is too tight then you start to look like Shirley Temple.

  36. So beautiful photos of curly haired women, I am inspired! I have naturally curly hair, and for many years I cursed the fact, but have grown to embrace it. When it comes to curls, it’s all about styling and KNOWING your own hair, which products works with your hair etc. 🙂

Love, love, love your site. Please consider showing more hair & beauty stories with more diversity. I am mixed race, olive skin, hazel eyes, masses of thick curly hair. ‘D like to see more models reflecting my image, as well as Asian, Indian and dark skins, in the mix of a very Nordiclly skewed beauty ideal.
Diversity and inclusiveness that reflects how we live today. Thanks

I HAVE to agree with Julie here. I have VERY coily little curls, sometimes when I have a day where they clump well together (it’s also very fine) they even look like artificial tight Shirley Temple curls except frizzy.

I have always had to wear it curly. Straight looks ridiculous on me, and my hair is actually so stubborn and curly that I can’t dictate the size and length of the curls either. It’ll do what it wants to do.

That said, I’ve learned to embrace them. There’s about 8 days in 10 that I’ll wish I had a more wavy pattern, instead of my tight curlies, especially because I’m fair-skinned and dark blonde, but that’s never going to happen. It last happened when I was 8, I think. I love curls, but as most curlies, I just hate mine half the time. 😉
