Flower Man

Danish photographer Ken Hermann couldn’t help but be instantly inspired by the sellers of Calcutta’s Malik Ghat flower market, one of the oldest and the largest of its kind in India. Each day, over 2,000 sellers hawk garlands of marigolds, enormous bunches of mango leaves, and handfuls of jasmine and sunflowers – all of which play a huge part in Indian rituals, festivals and weddings. The portraits of these male vendors posing, in front of the Hooghly River with their floral livelihoods, are totally striking and beautiful.

I love these pictures, I really do. I just wonder how much these men got paid to stand and pose in comparison to how much he sells the final print for It’s a little sad to just go to a country that has so much color, culture and vibrance, snap away and turn that into a profit! These poor men toil away from the wee hours of the morning and barely make anything to support themselves or their families. I really do appreciate the beauty in these shots and the soulful gazes but it just irks me when its turned into a $350 print. It’s one thing educating ppl on the view from the other side of the world and another to exploit it in the name of art.

@Rachel I should have mentioned this but the photographer did indeed pay some of them. And some of the vendors were actually willing to pose for him in exchange for prints.

Absolutely stunning… vibrant colors, friendly faces, beautiful Country. Reminds me so much of a celebration that we have in Mexico called “Día de Muertos” Day of the Dead on November 2nd, full of colorful flowers. India and Mexico are definitely twins.
