Bouncy

Posted by on

Do you remember that commercial that aired a few years ago involving hundreds of thousands of colorful bouncy balls wildly bouncing down the steep streets of San Francisco? Not only was it balls to the wall amazing, it was 110% real! And honestly, who doesn’t love bouncy balls? Danish photographer Peter Funch was there to capture the impressive spectacle and thanks to my new favorite online art store, Lumas, the limited edition prints are available for sale.

This is absolutely amazing! I don’t even know what to say. It’s so magical and strange to see a whole street engulfed in bouncy balls, that it doesn’t seem real. Watching this made me feel like a little kid does when they are entirely in wonder. I think my favorite parts of this video was the dog (or cat???) watching the balls bounce down the road, the lady smiling and watching out her window, and the frog jumping out the gutter into the colorful bouncy balls. Such an amazing video! Thank you so much for sharing.

I wish I had been there and seen all those bouncing balls with my own eyes, it must have been a pretty spectacular sight!

I don’t remember the commercial, but the video and photography are incredible. Those colorful bouncy balls set along with an acoustic guitar track truly capture a childlike innocence and the idea of diversity that’s very poetic! It boggles my mind that they got permission to basically litter the streets of SF with 250,000 plastic balls! I also enjoyed the “Making of” video, where you can hear the sound of clanking metal as the balls bounce onto cars and alarms going off. Pretty funny!

I WANT to love this, but can’t help thinking that out of all of those bouncy balls set loose, at least some of them were eventually washed into the ocean… And that makes me think of the choking hazard that they pose to animals that may mistake them for food. Sad face.

About 5 years ago my wife and I were walking through SoHo in New York and saw a print of the picture at the top of this article in the shop window of Lumas. We were spellbound. It was a bit indulgent, but it hangs in our home in London.

    Thanks Peter
