A Beautiful Decay

New York based photographer Andrew Moore is best known for capturing the eerie, yet captivating, feel of decaying and abandoned buildings from Governors Island to Detroit and Indiana to Ohio. My favorite of these post apocalyptic images has to be the house engulfed in leaves and the Dali-esque melted clock.

  2. These images remind me of that final scene in Sophia Coppola’s Marie-Antoinette, when the French people stormed the palace in Versailles, and tore the whole place apart. You didn’t see their actions, you just saw what was left behind. Beautiful and haunting.

  7. These photos are eerily beautiful. They make me want to wander through each. The ones of different theatres are especially captivating to me.

  8. How beautiful, amazing and sad all at the same time. My favorite one is the first one with the mirror that says “my heart is missing!”

as a theatre historian, it’s particularly sad to see all these pretty little prosceniums in decay – a testament to the popular theatre of the 19th century and the road system which once thrived so vigorously in this country. That little tiny pocket theatre with the golf carts parked in it is particularly affecting – poor little thing.

They so perfectly tread the line between sadness and beauty, seeing the new life spring from the decay is particularly poignant too.

These are stunning. I have a little bit of an obsession with abandoned and decaying places. There are some remarkable photos of closed theme parks in Asia and abandoned Olympic facilities around the world.

If some of these buildings could nt be saved, wouldn’t you think they could save some of the beautiful old carvings or paintings?

Whenever I see these type of images, it always puts me in my place – we are part of nature, and nothing we do can stand totally against the power of nature. I’ve been to similar type places and photographed abandoned spaces – well, abandoned by people, but reclaimed and inhabited by nature.
